I think it's an interesting place and would like to see it someday.

You are one of the last person I imagine visiting Russia in this forum. Have you ever visit some other countries? Because starting travelling by russia might be hard.

1. Is it as depressing and shitty as I imagine it to be?

Some part of the city can be pretty depressing, the mix between commie block and grey weather is a call for suicide. But I expect you will stay in the center of moscow or st petersburg, so it won't be. You will only see fancy building.

2. Are the people as cold as they are portrayed?

I barelly never saw a russian smiling, at least when they are not drunk. And some people were shock when I said "hello" and "good by" when entering and quitting a shop or a restaurant.
But I won't said russians are cold, they can be very welcoming and talk easy with you.

3.Would I get shit for being an American?

I don't think so, but people will probably try to fraud you.

4. What are the best things to see in Russia?

Depends of your taste.

I have to admit, I'd be a bit intimidated visiting Russia. I'd be afraid the water was polluted or some mafia ring was going to mug me. But like Etain, it sounds interesting.

Yes. I've honestly heard many bad things.
Crime, terrorism,economic issues, the insane high mortality rate among males...
But that just makes me more interested in seeing with my own eyes if it's really like I hear on the news.
I wanted to learn a bit of Russian too,but only know phrases like "vui punymash anglisky?"
