San Fran seems to be a place where you have to be rich to live there.

It is. That's the main thing I hate about the city. But that's not what the OP is talking about.

I just came back from Kansas City, and yeah, there are cool things about Kansas City, the history, the jazz, the BBQ, etc. But the streets were empty at night and it was dead. Nowhere near the vibrancy, the cosmopolitanism, the dynamism of San Francisco. NOWHERE.

Of course, it was great that houses there cost a tiny fraction of what they do in the Bay Area, and you get a huge nice house and a yard, real estate prices is what I hate most about the Bay Area. But there is always a lot happening in San Francisco and it is way more interesting than the vast majority of American cities outside of maybe NY and LA, most other American cities are pretty dead and boring tbh.

But I like boring, that's the thing, I want stability. I live in SF because I have access to a condo free of charge here, but I would prefer to live nearer to my school.

It's certainly interesting, but I do intend to move away after I'm done with school.

That's fine. But a city like San Francisco is needed. Unfortunately, it's also a victim of it's own success because it's so expensive here now because of the economic vibrancy, that a lot of the artist types that created much of the local culture can't even afford to live here anymore.

So San Francisco is really quickly becoming Manhattan lite.

That's fine. But a city like San Francisco is needed. Unfortunately, it's also a victim of it's own success because it's so expensive here now because of the economic vibrancy, that a lot of the artist types that created much of the local culture can't even afford to live here anymore.

So San Francisco is really quickly becoming Manhattan lite.

What I'm saying is that a place like San Francisco is a necessity. You have 98% of the rest of the country where it's pretty boring and you can pretty much throw a dart on the map and move to any of those places. But SF has always been unique in that it's a haven for many people who would be considered weird or misfits anywhere else.

The only thing that sucks is that reputation itself is being threatened by the tech industry which is turning SF into Manhattan and destroying the local culture.

I am a STEM person, that's why I came to school here. I realize we are dull, at least town like Santa Cruz havent really been touched, so you could get a bit of the feel of 'old SF' there.

I said Manhattan lite, which it is already becoming. There's only one Manhattan though, unless the finance industry completely relocates from New York to SF, I don't think it's going to happen. But SF is approaching Manhattan level real estate prices, so yeah, in that respect, it sucks for working people.
