An interesting fact about Angola is that Islam is effectively banned and not a recognised religion. Many mosques have been shut down by the government already.

This is the so called Chinese Model of economy, using real estate projects as pawns for printing money and loans, as long as there is a persistent driving force behind by devaluation of currency, such model will not lead to visible crisis, because devalued money will force people to buy new housings as everything else become transcient in value. Instead of visible financial crisis, people will be enslaved by these housing loans and environment will be heavily devastated as the hunger for money become uncontrollable for government business croonies. Don`t ever imitate chinese model, don`t import chinese experience. You will regret for your whole life and your posterity will suffer.

The housing prices are likely inflated, as the currency is artificially devaluated by pegging onto foreign currency or equity. These houses are either intended for foreign buyers or as tools of tax escapement by the expats. These are the tumors of corruption which have little to no long term benefit for local people. Just like what is happening in China everyday, pristine lands are exploited for these dirty purposes.

    Angola's wealth comes from oil.

With no doubt the most expensive city in the world. The irony. It is a lovely city but you are seeing the bay of Luanda only.

Not really, it is really expensive everywhere.

Might have been the case when Angola was an attractive destination a few years ago because nowadays it is the exact opposite, they are fleeing from Angola to Portugal since you can barely trade Kwanzas for Dollars nowadays. I don't understand also if you are implying that Portugueses are going to Angola in search of free accommodation granted by the government (lol), Portugueses living in Angola are upper class and the wealthiest community after the Angola's generals and politicians with close ties to the government. Portugueses are the ones who make the country's economy and major companies spin, if they would leave Angola would colapse.

Reason being, locals can't afford it, so they're empty.
That is in Kilamba and it's not a ghost town. Luanda was built by the Portuguese and had a maximum capacity of one million people. It is 2017 but the basic infrastructures and roads of access are still the same even though nowadays it has nearly 7 million people, it's freaking chaotic and the traffic is insane. The government is building entire cities from scratch on the periphery of Luanda and relocating people who lived in slums to there (with a lot of resistente by this people, they don't want to move to these towns on their free will).

Angola was one of the first countries to completely ban Islam. Truly remarkable.

Palanca-negra, unfortunately and endangered specie and one of the national symbols of Angola. Hunting an Palanca-negra or doing harm to one might get you into jail for decades.

There was immigration wave some years ago during the peak of the economic crisis but it is not the case now. Anyway as Endovelico mentioned it was mostly highly educated or qualified temporary workers who went to Angola because they paid extremely well (despite the astronomical living cost) and there was alot of international corporations (including many Portuguese) building and running the infra-structure who badly need qualified labor wich Angola can not supply...after the drop of the oil price they don't pay so well (and in time) anymore.

One thing nobody mentioned is the huge Chinese community established there because of bilateral agreements of the two governments.

It's more like 6 million +, 80-90% of it is Musseke (slums) constantly growing due to internal migration.

Here is what our Foreign Office says about Angola, with much of the report focusing on Luanda. Hardly an oasis of prosperity and wealth... https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-ad...y-and-security
