The municipality of Drangedal was established on 1 January 1838, the Old Norse form of the name was Drangadalr. The meaning of the first element is unknown and the last element is dalr which means "valley" or "dale, it's a forested valley located in Telemark county, the municipality includes the rural areas of Třrdal and Drangedal wich lies around the lake Tokke , it's main enterprises are farming, foresting and small industry. In Drangedal there is also a ruin of a fort from the 15th century called Grĺtoppslottet, wich is believed to have served as a base for Hallvard Grĺtopp who led a peasant revolt against Danish rule.
