IT appears FTDNA is having a sale on its products, including the y dna tests:
http://www.familytreedna.com/products.aspx

If anybody has interest, now would be the time to get the test and save a few dollars.

I've done 23andme and looked into McDonald/Gedmatch etc. Which test is best on FTDNA? There's so many.

I don't need FTDNA. 23andme gives me everything I want.

Although 12 marker tests don't have much meanings nowadays, It is still sad to see they've removed it completely.. It would be handful for people in short money and may want to start with it and upgrade in time..

If you have done 23andMe, the only benefit would be further testing of you y-dna or you mtdna. Some people have interest in this, even though it is just one of your ancestral lines. Moreover, some y-dna lines are better suited for further testing, like R1b. R1a is getting there too, in my opinion. With a y-dna of Q, you have an unusual one. Do you know much about your paternal line?

Thanks. The reason I'd be interested is exactly what you've pointed out, that Q is unusual. It's an Ashkenazi Jewish line.

Some say it could be associated with Khazars who converted to Judaism:

And Q y-dna among Those of the Jewish faith:

Thanks for the heads up. Its been a while since I last logged onto FTDNA.

I guess its a good opportunity to purchase the Y-Refine 37 to 67 for $79. But I'd rather get family finder for $20 more. They already have my sample from a few years back. If I purchase family finder can they just use my sample or would I have to send off another sample.

I've talked to a lot of people including experts about this and they've now gone away from the Khazar theory. They think it was a Scythian group that entered Persia in ancient times, then went to Assyria then Israel.

I really want to do this. Especially when it's on sale so I can save money. Which ydna test that FTDNA offers is best so that I can find out which STR cluster of E-M84 my father is?! It would either be one of the three Jewish clusters, the European cluster, or the Arabian cluster. http://www.haplozone.net/wiki/index.php?title=E-M34#E1b1b1c1a_.28E-M84.29

I am not sure. My understanding is there are two ways to gather information about your y-dna you get get a test with the minimum number of markers (67 is certainly adequate), or you can do a deep clade test for a specific SNP, if you have an idea what that may be. Regarding the latter, FTDNA offers varying numbers of deep clade tests for certain haplogroups. I am not very familiar with E1b. You would have to go to the FTDNA website and see what SNPs they offer for analysis.

Interesting to find out. Let us know if you're Jewish.
