Some could be French. Others look like they could be northern or central Italian.

I'm talking about the whole bunch as a group.
I'm having a hard time imagining them even as Spanish.

As a group they could probably only be Portuguese.

I assume this is a local team made up of... locals, obviously.

I really want to take the photos of soccer players and merge them to represent regions. What's great about photos of individual players is that they all take them the same way: straightforward. It makes it easy to merge them for an average look. Whether someone plays for Barcelona or Oporto or Manchester it says where they were born. I would ignore all players born in a city with a history of migrants from other regions/immigrants to get the best results for the average.

That will be my next social experiment.

Yes it's a local team.
They are "juniores" which means 17 to 19 year old players from a small vilage (2000 population), the poorest municipality of Portugal with probably 100% Portuguese people.
In the litoral/richer areas it's more likely to find foreigners.

From a distance I could believe in them being Italians. French - no, but many could pass I assume. About Spanish - I can't judge.

Same. Are there Portuguese phenotypes that are rarer in Spain and vice-versa? This man seems very 'Spanish' to me for example (start at 0:10):
