View Full Version : Which Balkan country has the ugliest architecture?

Archduke

It must be either Bulgaria or Albania unfortunately. Sofia is the ugliest looking capital from all Balkan capitals (Tirana is uglier as far as Ive heard, but I have never been there).

I must admit that even those silly ancient buildings are far better looking than the commie blocks which are all over Sofia (or any other Balkan capital)

Communist flat blocks are ugly, but it seems in Sofia are even worse ( based in the pic u posted).

Well except maybe the center, the macedonian parts looks very ugly, since majority of Macedonians live in those commie blocks (ugliest things ever built) and albanians in houses.

According to my great grandmother all Albanian houses had very big walls. A friend of mine from MAcedonia told me that its not much different even today.

Well it's true that we build big walls around our houses (not all but the majority does), but it doesn't have to look that bad as in your pics, some build stone walls which can look quite good imo.

@ Archduke I also wanted to say that these walls are mainly built in rural areas, you won't find many of such walls in cities for example.

Our leaders and intellectuals in 19. and early 20. century did a lot to de-ottomanise all aspects of our society. As a result, we know have typical European styles of that time with out own traditional elements in all major cities. At least the old town cores.

Only Sofia and several other big cities are very bad. Burgas for example is not that depressing.

But there is no doubt that every city/town/village is Soviet influenced which is super ugly.

So why do you think that Germans and Italians built everything here (Onur and other Turks who are not here anymore stated many times here how Ottomans built everything across Balkans so I am just quoting them)? Being a part of someone doesn't mean that after all, but being influenced is an another matter and in my opinion the most important though. Please don't embarrass yourself by showing your butthurt. Though not in the poll, but Regat has the ugliest architecture. Just look at their finest masterpiece, "Palace of the People".

Find pictures of Belgrade, Zagreb, Ljubljana, Bucharest. All cities have commie blocks and poor neighborhoods but also stunning architecture, especially in older parts.

*You erroneously lumped Ljubljana with Balkan cities, might wanna correct that bro.

Agree for the rest, I visited both Zagreb and Belgrade and must say both cities have really beautiful sights to offer, as do they have ugly ones. I find Balkan capitals quite charming in their own way so voted none.

There's a funny story how tourists agencies don't tour the parts of Belgrade below Vracar plateau/St. Sava temple(where old city ends). When tourists want to go further they tell them ''you've seen enough'' and they return to their countries with the impression that Serbia is not that far from EU standards. xD

Funny. I presume that is so because the St. Sava temple marks the beginning of New Belgrade? Well yeah, all those buildings of same shapes, built on 90 degree junctions are kinda reminiscent of socialist realism.

Although there are some recent architectural wonders in Belgrade, like the new bridge (designed by Slovenes (http://www.bizi.si/PONTING-D-O-O/maticno-podjetje/), btw)

Lena should explain it, if she reads this. :D But yes, something like that. Some not so fancy parts of the city are further south.

Reconstructing the facades of old buildings should be the priority imo. But some progress is made, I'd say.

I'll be sure to see it in detail myself, on my next visit (the 3rd one).

IMO, most of the Balkan's rural architecture is pretty soothing, the urban architecture however should be more creative...

It must be either Bulgaria or Albania unfortunately. Sofia is the ugliest looking capital from all Balkan capitals (Tirana is uglier as far as Ive heard, but I have never been there).

Sofia is very ugly
