Can ayone recommend a really good book on rune magick - particularly one that attempts to resurrect original practice? It's a bit of a minefield out there, seemingly, with so many books on the subject but most appearing to be very new-agey.

I've decided to have some runes tattooed on me, but want to ensure that the word I've chosen to represent is 'magickly' sound. I've previously not been as interested in runes as I have been in the Tarot and in divination practices which don't require 'props'. I bought an excellent book which introduces Runelore:

...but it doesn't go any further than reprinting the various rune poems, and gives no explanation on how to interpret or use the poems.

Our Forest Felling King (http://www.theapricity.com/forum/member.php?u=119) was kind enough to post up these three wonderful books on the subject:

Futhark: A Handbook of Rune Magic (http://www.theapricity.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7401) by Edred Thorsson (aka Dr. Stephen Flowers)

Runelore: A Handbook of Esoteric Runeology (http://www.theapricity.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7400) also by Thorsson

Runic Amulets and Magic Objects (http://www.theapricity.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9013) by Mindy McLeod and Bernard Mees

Any kind of divination can really get into one's head as if it wasn't there anyway..

Thanks Psychonaut (http://www.theapricity.com/forum/member.php?u=31) for putting those books up for reading. They are great books. I'm a book-viking too, you know..!!

So, over here (http://www.theapricity.com/forum/showthread.php?p=132556#post132556) is Thorsson's Rune-Song tape/CD and it's accompanying book.. (http://www.theapricity.com/forum/showthread.php?p=132556#post132556)

Later,

I've found in my experience, the runes are too organic to be truly "known" from reading a book. Meditation and gnosis is key.

I have used Blum's book, which I can't find at the moment and of which I have forgotten the title, but I can't recommend it because the readings it produces are very ambiguous.

I have also used "The Complete Illustrated Guide to Runes" by Nigel Pennick, published my Element Books, Ltd and found it lucid and well-organised. By "used", I mean that I have done some rune-casting with very variable results.

A friend of mine on the Internet several years ago asked me to do a rune cast concerning a problem that had been bothering him. I couldn't make head or tail of the reading, so I sent it to him and asked him if it meant anything to him.

His response rather surprised me. He said "My God, it sure does. Thanks a lot." Even from Blum's confusing book, I once got a reading which was eerily appropriate. I had drawn Odin's Rune concerning the fate of a seriously ill colleague of mine. I got Death the first time which didn't surprise me. The second time I drew Odin's Rune, I got Warrior.

It meant, of course that he would "not go gently into that good night" but would go down fighting. In the weeks before his death, he gave a series of brilliant lectures to his colleagues which I was privileged to attend. He wrestled with the Grim Reaper to the very end.

On the other hand, I would be less than honest if I did not admit that many of my readings were sheer gibberish. I think that, for one thing, one must be in the right frame of mind to do them correctly. Also, there is always some ambiguity in the interpretation of the reading and I may have chosen the wrong meanings for some of the runes.

I'd like to contribute Ralph Blum's "New Book Of Runes". It's the only rune-related .PDF file I have that is small enough to share through the attachments option. I hope it is of some use to those of you interested in the runes.

This is a very powerful event. It is excellent that you were able to lend yourself to your friend in this way.

In my opinion, the runes always give you SOMETHING. And it's always correct. Your interpretations may be different sometimes but it's only because the runes are deep to no end.

Also, I have a number of rune-related titles in .pdf format that I would like to share but are too large to uploaded as attachments. If someone could instruct me on how to host these documents somewhere and link to them I would be more than happy to do so.

I have the following titles:

Galdrabok as presented by Stephen Flowers
Futhark - A Handbook Of Rune Magic by Edred Thorsson
The Book Of Runes by Ralph Blum
Stavs & Runes - A Beginner's Guide by Alex Pidd
A Begginer's Guide To Runes by Kristyna Arcarti
Galdr - Verbal Rune Magic
Meanings Of The Runes by Bernard King
Magic Runes by Samael Aun Weor
Runa by Stephen Flowers
Runelore by Edred Thorsson

I can certainly recommend my own book on the subject, available through Amazon and all good bookshops. Message me if you want the details.
