View Full Version : Irish with Iberian/North African?

Any other Irish find that they have Iberian and North African on 23andMe? I've noticed that some of my matches who are Irish have 5-6% Southern European (generally Iberian) and North African. Where does this come from as 23andMe is accurate for modern populations (rather than prehistoric migrations)?

Ireland and Iberia are very much genetically linked along with the rest of the british isles. Eskal Herria the Basque land anyhow...

Right, but this comes from America. I'm talking about DNARelatives who are fully Irish, from Ireland.

You mean from the AC? I share with 6 Irish and 5 of them have 0% South European. The other 1 has like 5% & that majority is Italian. There's no trend in it.

Well, it supposedly traces back as far as 500 years, but, I'm assuming it goes further back if that's the case.

That means before the era of modern travel, so basically modern populations before mass migrations and colonizations.

Actually that 5%, I said. She might not be Irish, I don't know. She's the wife of an Irishman I shared with.
Here are the Irish results on Standard, that I share with. Including a poster from here called Jack B.

Irish people are such a small population and so monolithic that it's impossible for some of them to get these scores unless they mixed with foreigners in the last couple of centuries.

Lol, this is what I'm asking. Is there recent admixture from Iberia in some Irish people? Has there been enough movement of people from Spain to Ireland through trade and such that some Irish people have significant Iberian admixture? Particularly in the West.

There has been some movement in both directions. Ireland exported commodities to Spain and from 16th century up to 1818 there were always Irish in the Spanish army.

I haven't had my dna tested but maybe one day. I'm fully Irish so it would be interesting but I doubt there would be any surprises. Irish cluster with British and have very low diversity. They have less genetic diversity than English people being a bit more isolated. If they had North African dna they would cluster well away than where they do. I don't think the people you are talking about are from Ireland but most probably of mixed ancestry. It would be interesting if the Irish happened to be a bit unusual in their genetics but it doesn't appear to be the case.

North African admixture in Ireland is probably why you can find the "Black Irish"
Not that they are dark but if you put zidane next a random irishman, zidane who has redish skin will look way darker they are so pale
We had a Irish school visit ours in Denmark, Skin color-wise they were wayyyyy paler/white

Not just North Africa, even Iberian (or other kinds of non-British isles European ancestry) would make those Irish stand out and cluster far away from the tight cluster of native Irish people.

No my mom's side of the family does not have Greek and the French Canadians came from the North, I believe they cluster with the English. Also I'm finding people who match me on segments that say Southern Europe, but their ancestors came from Ireland. Ever heard of a book called, "When Scotland was Jewish"? Could be a Sephardic connection because many of the surnames are Scottish/English.

This is more accurate from the Genographic Project 2.0 Next Generation:
If you are a native of Ireland.
Irish population:
79% (Great Britain & Ireland)
11% (Scandinavian)
6% (Southern Europe)
4% (Western & Central Europe)
