Teen addiction to pornography a growing problem (http://www.wdam.com/story/24214346/teen-addiction-to-pornography-a-growing-problem)

The statistics are truly shocking. Children aged 12 to 17 are one of the largest consumer groups of online porn. Experts say this early exposure to sexually explicit video can hook kids on hardcore and often violent imagery.

Shelley Lubben is a former adult film actress turned anti-porn advocate. In 2008, she created the pink cross foundation which offers resources for teens struggling with porn addiction.

"We are raising a whole generation of porn addicts," says Shelley, "When you view pornography, it creates a chemical reaction in your brain, and for a youth who is in puberty, it's like a hundred times more stimulation."

Joseph Sciambra was first exposed to pornography when he was only 8 years old. And his fascination with porn turned into an obsession as a teenager.

"It's a difficult time in your life. You're feeling inadequate and lonely and depressed. And pornography really offers an escape," says Sciambra.

By the time he was 19, it was no longer enough to just watch porn, he had to be in it. So Scaimbra decided to become a porn star. He writes all about his experience in his book Swallowed by Satan.

Sciambra describes that, "Going into porn films was not a big leap for me because I had seen every sort of porn scenario."

Sciambra has now walked away from the porn industry. He says, since the release of his book, many teenagers have reached out to him about their own problem with porn addictions. He says "they know it's taking over their life."

Warning signs to watch out for include failing grades, isolation from family and friend, lying or being secretive about how they spend their time, and depression.

"Parents, you need to talk to your kids about the problem of pornography. And you can only do that if, first of all, you are not viewing pornography," Lubben says, "Put your pornography away first."

Shelley Lubben spoke to her own daughters about pornography before they discovered it for themselves.

In my opinion, the solution to get rid of any sort of addiction is to keep yourself busy in meaningful stuffs all the time. Sing a song, do a painting, write something down, do some social work, gym ... whatever you want. And try to be with people and outside as much as you could.

What is the purpose of the videos developed by the project?
The videos (even those that some find offensive) are meant to make the viewer think. Is what you're watching "weird?" Does it make you uncomfortable? Do you think there might be something wrong with this? Yes?

Think about the pornography you look at online. Is it worse? Are you sure? Maybe you need to take another look at it. Maybe you need to reevaluate other things in your life. Maybe not, but at least you thought about it. When was the last time you did that?

This is the purpose of those "weird" videos. I hope that clears things up.

Pornography is actually a very real problem, it makes people, especially the young think sex is something it isnt

Loki, do you remember dialing into BBS's at all or Compuserve?

I was already a teenager when the internet first broke to the public but even I had a curiosity with that stuff on a 9600 baud modem back when I was 12 exactly.

It isn't surprising that pornography be a problem, when everything you watch in TV is related to sex and if you add that many children are being educated by TV and anyone supervises what they're watching. Just take a look to MTV and this kind of crap.

It's just a natural curiosity. Even before I had internet I remember my friends brought a porno to school and gave it to me when I was 11 and that was like gold since I had never seen such a thing before before. It's just a natural human impulse. Blame ourselves and our nature rather than technology.

If the average Joe were able to access real sex easily and efficiently, there would be less need for pornography.

I was in South Africa at the time. And yes, dial-up internet.

In most places in Europe you can get a five star knock out hooker for about 20-40 Euros. Life is much more laid back here. We work hard but we are realistic instead of demented puritans so we know how to chill as well.

I was there before even dial up internet (around 1996) but this is an awkward thread to mention it. I just remember when I was 11-12 (1992-1993) dialing into free BBS and going into compuserve forum and downloading a single porn image at a time, which would take about 20 minutes to load.

Where is this? In Germany, hookers went for E 150 / Hr.

Caismeachd

In Germany they are 40-50 euro. 70 at most if you want special benefits. If you went there and they were charging you that much they obviously were trying to scam you.

You mean you only went online to download porn?

Caismeachd

Yes there were bbs you could dial. That was the only way to get porn back then. You'd connect to a bbs, wait 5 minutes, take a chance on a random picture, wait 5 mins for it to download. I'm suprised I was so smart and resourceful when I was 12 (1993 before internet hit). Wonder why my parents weren't monitoring me. The must not have had a clue either.

Back then when you downloaded stuff you paid for the minute you were connected and how much you downloaded. I remember I downloaded Duke Nuken 3d and it charged my dad a fortune and he nearly kicked my ass.

Anyways. The mindset hasn't changed at all a generation before. We were all still desperate (even more desperate since we didn't have internet) to see porn as well when we were 12.

My best friend in high school was so addicted to porn, he would make references to it non-stop prettymuch all day like for example...we had a brunette teacher, non-hispanic, who he started referring to as a "busty latina", others he would say things like "tight milf", you get the idea. His whole worldview became porn-based.

His life is a mess now, he can't hold down a job but i try to help him whenever i can. It has left me with a serious distaste for pornography, which i consider to be the routine abuse/exploitation of both men and women (but mostly women) for money. Selling people's dignity is bullshit, and one of the things that i critique about capitalist systems.

Advertising for...

cars, you see tits.
chocolate bars, you see tits.
shampoo, you see ass.
shoes, tits.
perfume, ass and/or tits.
sporting events, tits.

Ironically, one of the few advertisements i've seen without tits was for bras, since women buy them and aren't hypnotized by tits.

It's pretty meaningless. That's the direction this thread is going in now (imagine me wearing thick goggle frame glasses and wearing possibly dentures as I say this and previous threads, I am only a spawning mighty salmon wanting to make a decree of its majesty).

Adolescents have been horny like that since the dawn of day. It's not porn's fault.

That's true but when it became so easily accessible and porn companies are pushing their advertisements to lure young people, most often through non-porn related websites i think it becomes a porncentric issue.

I feel like I'm being treated like a dumb animal as though tits are the only thing that can drive me to buy products.

Nothing wrong with getting your juices flowing. But as with everything else, excesses = bad.

If you are addicted to porn, there is something physically wrong with you. What is supposed to happen is upon release, hormone levels drop out, and such things are of zero interest for whatever amount of time.

When you are married in a healthy relationship then people usually avoid these addictions. Its if they start before hand, it creates a distorted concept of women. Pornography is evil.
