So I heard some people talking about Flapjacks in the Chatbox.. "flapjack". What the hell is a 'flapjack'?? ITS A PANCAKE. Flapjack was just some jerk water named "Jack"'s idea to try and steal the thunder from this delicious breakfast classic. Is there anything that would differentiate a flapjack from a pancake? Let's think, what do you put on flapjacks, topping wise, SYRUP, the same exact syrup that you put on pancakes... THATS WHY ITS CALLED PANCAKE SYRUP. Never once have I heard someone refer to it as "flapjack sauce". Seriously, its a pancake, its in a pan its essentially a basic cakish recipe.. pan cake! I understand that a flapjack has some kind of tie into the great North American past time of lumberjacking, so I will make an exception, that if you are one of the remaining lumberjacks on the continent, fine, in your logging camp only, you may refer to them as flapjacks. Don't show up on my local pancake pub, and start throwing out your lumberjacking slang like some douche that just got back from New Zealand and started to refer to cool things as "Choice".

Don't let me hear it again or I'll have to send my monkey after you.

Indeed!!! This is actually one of the biggest reason it bothered me...I am lenient enough to allow them to change crisps to chips, biscuits to cookies, and chips to fries, but Pancakes which were actually invented in America should have on name from now on, and as I have so eloquently proved it is pancakes and pancakes alone, although I may make the occasional exception for "fatcrepes".

I have to wonder where the term flapjack really did come from. I have grown up in a location where both terms were used and interchangeable without any problems from people. In fact, many local restaurants still label some of their pancake meals as flapjacks. Triple Flapjack Stack and stuff like this. I personally have never given the whole idea much of a thought before right now. I personally am not very concerned with what people call them, as long as they taste great when I eat them. Using the word "Flapjack" for pancake not only is wrong because you are taking the name of an already established food, and giving it to another food, but it is also proven to be a sign of schizophrenia. See for yourself:

They call it Soccer in Australia as well. Most Australians don't like it either similar to Americans. It's a pom sport to them. Australia has it's own weird version of football different than anywhere else. Aus has kept a British culture though much more than US though. (They eat marmite there and have similar slang, whinging vs whining etc and overall culture).

Things only America does, call Z 'Zee' instead of "Zed". Most English speaking countries saying whinging instead of whining. Americans pronounce coupe wrong. It's pronounced coup-ey. They pronounce car brands wrong like Hyundai etc. In America they say "Hon-day" but it's pronounced hi-yun-day.

There are more examples but I can't think of any more at the moment.

Gurka is also the word for cucumber in Swedish. Not sure what the etymology of the word is. Calling pickled cucumbers just pickles is a little simple when you think about it lol. Rocket is arugula but both words are incorrect nonsense from their original sources. Rocket comes from French roquette and arugula comes from some Italian word I can't remember.

Yes Exactly!!! Also "American Pizza" is very much the mindset of the typical American diet.. Pour on a Bunch of Toppings the More The Better!!! But Italian food is about balance, and proper marrying of ingredients and flavors together to create the perfect flavor combinations. Simple beauty!

Indeed, that is part of our food war. I LOVE veggies....raw, slightly cooked, whatever. Instead of eating hot meat/potatoes type fare, I prefer much lighter, cold or asian style foods. Two veggies most associated with Cali....avocado and alfalfa sprouts LMAO. The fare there is partially associated with the climate. It's basically on the order of at least 75-80 degrees all year round where I grew up. Obviously not the case for New England. Hubs doesn't usually handle the mouthfeel of raw veggies very well....half the time he spits the stems from COOKED veggies out.

Then you have the coffee war.....it's his Dunkin' Donuts versus me....the NW Coffee Snob. The few times I've gone into an East Coast DD have been STRESSFUL. If you don't know EXACTLY what you want the second you get to the counter....they are ON you. Yikes! I hear it's the same in the restuarants around Boston's North End. Whereas you can go into a NW Coffehouse....starbucks or something similar and ask questions and get exactly what you want :)

We finally came to a happy medium which satisfies my coffee snobbery, yet is simple in use and preparation.....we bought a newfangled fancy coffeemaker handmade in the Netherlands :) I must say it does a damn fine job of making good, strong coffee!

I come from the notion that you can put any foods together if you feel like it. He is much more restricted in his thinking. If you don't put stuff together the way you buy it in a restaurant or whatnot he won't like it. Just found out recently from him that the culture in New England is one is which encourages people to hover around the norm....or be more average. Don't go on the radar.

Out here people are a little wilder and more inclined to just do what they want.

This can be both a good and bad thing :)

Yet I do love New England and could actually live there for a time. I love the fact they get seasons. We don't as much :( New England Autumns are to die for!

Very Funny From all that you Wrote I think I would be on Both sides of the Spectrum... California and Italy have similar Mediterranean climates so we eat a lot of veggies and fresh foods too of course along with our meats, and pastas we have the full meal... Lots of fresh and well balanced, thats key to our food. But We are also like your husband that we are very picky as to what works with what and what does not or should not be eaten together.. in our thinking if its not optimal together than it does not go.
I think its the thousands of years of developing a food culture that has make it so. We also are not fond of having our foods touch each other which is something that really bugs me about many people that I dine with lol... They will often mix my foods all willy nilly no order to the meal and foods touching each other flavors mixing up lol. I cant stand it!

As for coffee I think DD isn't really so good at all... I have always wanted to try Seattle coffee since it is so famous.
