They (the audio technicians at the time) claimed to lack the appropriate technology to actually achieve this. That is, they could only have acheived this if they would know how the words could sound backwards and that this could only be acheived with the experimentation of certain word combinations. Since analog technology was in use, it was therefore virtually impossible to preconcieve such an effect.
