"In the years before the unravelling of the Soviet empire, there was a lot of discussion about whether or not Ukraine would really want independence. Many people regarded the ethnic difference between Russians and Ukrainians as minor – comparable, for example, to the English and the Scots – and assumed that the independence movement would peter out once the grievance of communism was removed. (This was, of course, also the predominant Russian view.)"

Whole Ukraine would bring lots of trouble and can even mutate to a civil war/rebellion in the western parts of ukraine

Russia knows how to handle rebellion
Anyway blame Poland for helping create Ukrainian nationalism http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prometheism

Depends whether you think Ukrainians are simply a regional variant of Russians or an entirely different ethnic group.

Yanukovych should bring in the tanks and end this pro-NWO, pro-Antichrist Maidan. Coming from a Galician (western) Ukrainian.

Well if Azeris are a different ethnic group then Ukrainians can also be one

Russian and Ukrainian languages are not mutually intelligible. Hence Ukrainians are a different ethnicity, but 500 years ago we were one.

Interesting perspective. I was under the impression that they were intelligible? But even if they aren't that is not necessarily a barrier to being one country. I mean many German dialects are unintelligible with each other yet Germany exists. And also Russia is a federation with many regional identities so Ukrainians can maintain their identity if they join. Kind of like Wales has a national identity even if it is part of the UK. But I guess that is a choice for the Ukrainian people to make.

Well there are high mountains acting as a natural barrier between Azeri lands and Turkey. However there is none between Russia and Ukraine.

I agree. But most Ukrainians are brainwashed by Western-sponsored nationalism.
