I still don't fully understand what the protesters want. Ukraine is bankrupt due to Ukrainians electing wrong kind of politicians + due to this nation's inability to build a functioning economy. The EU can not give money to Ukraine, only Russia can. By giving Ukraine a 33% discount on natural gas AND by giving it $16b it saved Ukraine. It was that or default on debt and extreme poverty. Yet people want to be closer to Europe for some reason, but why ? the EU has clearly shown that it has no interest in Ukraine.

you are right, except for one thing. Freedom of thought gives room for creativity, and they have freedom of thought and freedom of expression, much more so than the russians do.

It's not really engineered, its a part of the culture or so. Ukraine has been historically very divided, east vs west + the country is very poor, hell Ukrainians together with Moldavian are the poorest people in Europe I suspect. Its natural that some forces in the country want change, its just that the current economic situation is atm inappropriate for a real revolution.

Besides, they already had a revolution in 2005 when very corrupt forces came to power (Yushenko+Timoshenko), it's possible that even if Yanukovich falls and a pro western president takes his place, then nothing will change. New president + new government could easily succumb to the basic desire to steal billions.

In the current situation there is no choice for Ukraine other than to eat from the Russian hand, since the Russian had is not empty in fact its loaded with billions while the European hand has only €700m on it or so.

Imo: Ukrainians had 20+ years of independence to build a functioning economy, and they have failed, and it can only mean that they as a society are too immature to be a part of Europe, and since Europe doesn't want them contrary to other poor countries like Romania/Bulgaria, then the choice is rather logical: look at Russia and be a Russian toy.
