Lots of people like a bit of liquor every now and again, but that doesn’t mean they agree on what to fill the glass with.

The only liquors considered were the six most common worldwide: whiskey, vodka, tequila, rum, gin, and brandy. Regional and country-specific hard alcohols—like, say baiju in the case of China—were not included.

According to data from Euromonitor, some countries like just what you would expect, like Russia, where vodka is easily the popular choice, or Mexico, where tequila trumps all other spirits. For others, the alcoholic weapon of choice is less obvious. The US, for example, prefers vodka to whiskey, as does the UK. (Data for Scotland weren’t available separately.) The Dutch are the only ones who like gin best. And Saudis, who live in a country where alcohol is technically illegal, prefer whiskey.

In all, nearly half of the countries (25 of the 53) like whiskey best, nearly 40% (21) prefer vodka, and very few are most fond of gin, brandy, or rum—1, 2, and 4, respectively.

Interesting. I thought whisky would be more popular in Canada and the US.

I noticed, the countries that make the best whiskey (Ireland, UK, USA), it's not as popular.

Why no Beer or Wine?

I guess this only includes "hard liquors."

I think vodka is popular, since you can use it on drinks.

it seems to be logical, vodka is more popular by younger people

if I drink vodka I can get arrested as a black out for some strange reason LOL. I like whiskey not vodka. I know how much whiskey it takes before I realize I have had enough.

Armenia produces some of the finest brandy in the world. During my reunion, with distantly related relatives in Armenia, they opened bottles of Armenian Brandy and Armenian Cognac at the dinner table. I got drunk with sweet pleasure. I understand that France granted Armenia the privilege of making their own cognac, probably the only country to receive that honor.

By the way, why isn't Armenia's drinking preference included in the map statistics? Clearly Armenia is a brandy drinking country. I guess that they don't hold a place of interest, in drinking communities?

The British Government taxed our drink, to a ridiculous level, more than any other. Plus the stats are for UK as a whole.

Edit: we do make Vodka here also.

My preference is also with whiskey, and brandy as well. I also stay away from vodka, and the same is true with gin. Vodka and Gin don't hold a candle to the way that Whiskey and Brandy are prepared with tender loving care, with much flavor enhancement in a very professional environment.

Vodka is popular in the US because it is used with all the fufu drinks chicks like. Additionally cheap vodka is the choice for alcoholics.
