If Catalonia became independent, it would be the 4rth European country in terms of GDP per capita, after Luxembourg, Ireland and the Netherlands, and right before Austria and Sweden.

1. Luxembourg: € 64.900
2. Ireland: € 35.900
3. Netherlands: € 33.200
4. Catalonia: € 32.600
5. Austria: € 31.300
6. Sweden: € 30.200

(Data: 2008)

This is at least what has been stated in a report by the Catalan Business Cercle, a non-profit association of Catalan businessmen.

The Catalan GDP per capita in 2008 was, actually, € 29.700. What the report takes into account is how it would change accordingly without the tax loss of 10% of the GDP that goes to the Spanish Government and never comes back.

The website also includes a section called the Catalan Salary, where every citizen can calculate how their personal income would increase with independence.

Could you tell an ignorant like myself why Catalan would make more money separate from Spain? Are the other parts of Spain draining the money?

Are the other parts of Spain draining the money?

Well, the Spanish Government calls it territorial solidarity.
