Sicilians have historically always been oriented toward the east, in ancient times beginning with the Phoenicians and ending with the Moors, but following the Norman rule, they have been gradually incorporated into the Western European cultural sphere. Today's Sicilian culture is largely legacy of two cultures; their Byzantine past, and their Norman and Neapolitan past.

Since when Sicily is independent from Italy?

I find Portuguese completely European, nothing strikes me as odd about them. As a matter of fact I like their attitude. They are just Europeans. Sicilians, seem more "Southern" to me and a bit exotic. I think I would fit among Portugueses without major adjustments easy. Adjusting to Sicilians would be more involved. To me and my personality Portuguese culture seem a lot less foreign.

Sicily seems less 'pan'-European (as in, culturally compatible with countries like France or England).

There is not such thing as '' pan'' european culture.
