View Full Version : Post your MC1R SNPs - Do you have the Ginger Gene?

Thor2009

There are 6 major known mutations in the MC1R gene that can predispose you to having pale skin, freckles, and red hair: also known as being ginger.

Being recessive for one of these mutations almost guarantees you'll be 100% ginger, but having one or more heterozygous mutations has also been shown to have an effect on skin and hair color.
The more variant alleles you have, the stronger the effect appears to be.

There's a lot of interesting research, you can find most of it here: http://omim.org/entry/155555

So, which ginger mutations do you have?
Are you red haired, fair skinned, and freckled yourself? Do you have ginger family members?

I'm pretty ginger; my hair has a red tint to it, my beard is red, and I've got pale skin and freckles.
It runs in my family: my mom is ginger, with light red hair and pale freckled skin. There are actually a lot of gingers on that side of my family.

Interestingly enough I seem to have inherited this from my paternal grandfather who is 100% Southern Italian who passed it onto my father who passed it onto me. I know this because both my grandfather and father have also tested and so has my mother.

I probably should have gone into a bit more detail.

rs1805005/V60L is associated more with blond hair color, though it is weakly associated with red. It's not so much a "ginger gene" as the other five.

What I find interesting is that you don't have to have the genes to have red undertones, I don't have the variant, but when my hair is naturally highlighted by the sun I get reddish/auburn streaks. People with ashy/green undertones in their hair do not highlight reddish.
