Hmm well I should be tooting our own horn, we are afterall hosting a winter games yet again in my glorious country, Canuckistan :P :D

This time the games are being held not in Calgary, Alberta but next door in beautiful Vancouver (and area), British Columbia.

So for those of you who do enjoy watching the winter games (which for me are ever so more exciting to watch than the summer games), is there a particular sport you like to watch?

Personally, I love watching all manner of alpine skiing and hockey (of course ). I used to enjoy watching some skating as well but not so much lately. I also enjoy watching cross-country skiing and biathlon, believe it or not. Oh and ski jumping is always great. Gods how I miss the days of Eddy the Eagle! (yep I'm dating myself there I think! :P)

Well, what do you hope to follow during these games?

Forgive a maybe ignorant question Aemma, but isn’t Vancouver kind of rainy in winter?

Eldritch

I don't really have any interest in the Alpine events. Ski jumping is the shit for me. :thumb001:

Cross-country skiing, why not. Biathlon, certainly. And curling, believe it or not. :p

Hockey as well, of course, even though the Finnish team will suck as always. Finns are no good at team sports.

Forgive a maybe ignorant question Aemma, but isn’t Vancouver kind of rainy in winter?

:) No it's a good and fair question Jamt. :) That's why I put in parentheses "and area" precisely because the city of Vancouver is quite rainy and doesn't get snow (usually). But since many venues can be housed in arenas and such, for instance figure skating, hockey, speed skating, curling and the like, the City of Vancouver can itself host these events. All activities requiring actual snow will be held in other venues of the lower mainland such as in Whistler (for instance, world class skiing and snowboarding). I'm not quite certain where the biathlon and other cross-country skiiing events will be held, but in the Whistler area I would think, as would the bobsledding, luge, and ski jumping.

Fair question though Jamt and a good one. Thanks! :)

Cheers!...Aemma :)

As always? That's why Finland have come from "nowhere" to be in the final games for medals despite sucking at team sports?
Calgary, Lillehammer, Nagano and Torino.
You have to be fair, Finland is the smallest of the Big five (no USA, is not one of the big five) but still pops up regularly to claim medals.

I love the Winter Olympics and am very much looking forward to watching the games. I grew up skiing and ski racing--so, that's surely my favorite part.

The hockey is great too, speed skating, ski jumping...ah hell, all of it!

That rascal Bode Miller grew up in the same area that I did....

Maybe an ignorant remark as well but from "climatological" point of view some inner areas of Canada really sound me much more wintry than British Columbia.
But they do same in Russia-according to the average temperatures Sochi is one of the warmest places in Russia in winter.

Yes very very tragic and this young Olympian was well remembered and respected during the opening ceremonies yesterday. Very very sad...

In the news yesterday they commented that the luge track is a very fast one. Apparently luge is generally a safe (enough) sport where lugers never get catapulted off the track themselves. But investigations by the RCMP as well as the IOC are apparently ongoing. Some lugers have apparently even commented that the track is too fast. :(

My favorite thing to watch is cross-country skiing, Estonians have talent in that. Estonia has always been successful in the winter Olympics, considering that the population is only 1.3 million, but we got more gold medals last time then countries like Norway, the UK or China.

Christine Nesbitt wins gold in speed skating thriller

February 18, 2010
Jim Byers

VANCOUVER— Christine Nesbitt looked stunned. The crowd looked ecstatic.

Nesbitt won a gold medal Thursday in the women's 1000-metre speed skating event, giving Canada its third gold of the Vancouver/Whistler Winter Olympics and seventh overall.

Nesbitt, who lives in London, Ontario, got out to a solid if unspectacular start but cranked it up down the stretch. She ended up winning by 2/100ths of a second, just edging out a pair of Dutch skaters for the top spot in a thrilling race that no doubt will spark a Thursday night party in Vancouver, not to mention London.

Everything is ok as long as Norway beats Sweden.

Oh no need to be embarrassed though nisse. Really. :) Go Canada! Go!!:smilie_flagge17:
I'm embarrassed because I don't think they played a good game...losing is one thing, but losing and not putting on a good show is *really* bad :(

...and Go Canada Go!...I didn't know who to cheer for in that game, actually...:p

Now as for women's 2-man bobsleigh! Wow! A Gold and Silver finish for Canada 1 and Canada 2 and US 2 getting the Bronze. Simply wild and wonderful!

I sort of wonder if the home field advantage was not a tad bit unfair in this case...a lot of top teams that are known for piloting had really bad crashes :ohwell:

But hey, I'm not complaining about the medals :P...I really liked the reaction of the guy who won Gold in skeleton...his beer chugging victory walk will forever be on my list of "awesome ways to celebrate" :thumb001:

 For a country not renowned with much snow such as Australia, our current medal count is 2 gold and 1 silver. Best games ever! :thumb001:

I was watching some of your countrywomen doing some of those aerial jumps last night, Brynnie! Gah! What guts and spirit! One of them was 38 years old and a veteran of the sport in Australia. She was amazing! :thumb001:

Congrats Australia!

What everybody wants to know in this country right now is: did Sweden lose deliberately to avoid having to face Canada? :thumbs up

LOL ;) :D

Well I was sad to see Sweden getting eliminated though. But it means that the Ottawa Senators Captain, Daniel Alfredsson, will be getting a good rest before real hockey comes back on tv. ;) :D

My favourite Sens defenseman, Anton Volchenkov, will be getting a good rest too it looks like. ;)

Next gold for Germany in Women's Alpine giant slalom.

Tonight at the women’s curling finals, team Norberg will spank some Canadian bare asses and make everything plain and right. Female curling is one of the best TV sports ewer invented, I did not know that until this Olympic. Credit to Canada for a good event.

Now that's the spirit! ;) :thumb001:

It will definitely be a great match up for sure. I'm not much of a curling fan myself though so I'll let the other Canucks watch this event. :P

But have fun watching Jamt! :thumb001:

Well, we collapsed in the USA match, there's no denying that. Right now I'm pretty devastated, as the whole Finnish team are, or should be. However I still think we can pull ourselves together to fight for a medal tomorrow.

...someone has low standards :ohwell:

You should watch freestyle skiing, snowboarding or even speed skating - competitors (both male and female) are much better looking there ;)...no the reason I watch though :D :ohwell:

P.S. Canada's got 13 gold - YEY! We own the podium :D...now just the hockey gold to seal the deal :D
