From surf to turf: Ancient Britons ditched fishy dishes for a dairy-rich diet 6,000 years ago
Seafood was of little importance in the diets of the Neolithic farmers
Dairy products dominated the menu as soon as cattle and sheep arrived
Early British farmers living 6,000 years ago preferred beef, mutton and milk
It is thought that the use of cattle for dairy products from the earliest Neolithic indicates that farming was introduced by experienced immigrants

Dirty cooking pots have shown that ancient Britons swapped seafood for dairy dishes as they started farming around 6,000 years ago.
Scientists have been investigating when and how our ancestors made the transition from hunter gathers to farmers and conducted a large-scale investigation of British archaeological sites dating from around 4,600 BC to 1,400 AD.

The ability to milk animals was a revolution in food production as for the first time, humans did not have to kill animals to obtain food. However, it requires a high level of skill and knowledge, leading experts to think that dairy farming was introduced by experienced immigrants

THE NEOLITHIC PERIOD

The Neolithic period dates from approximately 7,000BC to 2,000BC.
Britain became separated from the European mainland circa 6000BC.
Between 4,500BC to 2,500BC, housing became increasingly solid and permanent.
The most famous construction from this period is Stonehenge, which was built in several stages from 2,800BC to 1,800BC.
Agricultural techniques were also introduced from Europe and the earliest examples of pottery date back to this time.
Man began to make increasingly sophisticated stone tools - late in the Neolithic period was when axes constructed from polished flint were introduced.
Between 4,500BC and 3,000BC small and permanent settlements began to appear and communal burials begin to take place.
