Luxury Revealed As Yanukovych Flees Palace

Shock, disgust and anger were just some of the emotions filling Ukrainians as they took in their deposed president's grand estate.

Thousands took the opportunity to see the president's luxurious estate

A sign hanging outside the entrance read: "People, do not destroy this evidence of thieving arrogance."

Thousands wandered around in amazement as they took in the trappings of Viktor Yanukovych’s breathtaking luxury presidential palace, now under the control of anti-government activists after he fled on Saturday.

A private golf course, a zoo, a floating banquet hall resembling an Elizabethan galleon, a helicopter pad, ponds, statues and a greenhouse are just some of the features of the 345-acre compound.

Rare pheasants imported from as far as Mongolia and Sumatra were discovered, Australian and African ostriches roamed the grounds, and peacocks could be seen strutting about.

Half the size of Monaco, the vast country estate is only an hour's drive from the capital Kiev, but for those wandering around its waterways and summer houses it felt like another world in a country where the average wage is less than £300 a month.

Retired veteran Natalia Rudenko said: "I am in shock. In a country with so much poverty how can one person have so much - he has to be mentally sick.

"The world needs to see this and bring him to justice."

Many posed for photos, keen for something to remember a defining moment in their nation's history.

Some came from Independence Square, the focal point of the protests that forced Mr Yanukovych to flee.

Mr Yanukovych fled to the east of Ukraine on Saturday

Protesters stood guard to ensure there was no looting

Bogdan Panchyshin, a hardware store owner still wearing a bullet-proof vest, said: "It makes it feel even more worth it. If only the hundred people who died could see it, I think they'd say the same."

As for what should happen to the mansion and its sprawling grounds, some Ukrainians suggested it should become an orphanage.

Others say it should be turned into something for the protesters who have given up their lives to ensure that the man who once professed to be on the side of Ukraine's poor is certain to never return there.

at least Bryncalov stuck to the crazy and didn't change the style of the interior in every room. it's in incredibly poor taste but at least it's not mismatched.

linda leavell described the style of living
by poetess marianne moore and her mother
as "ostentatious frugality"

and that phrase explains why
the government never audits some tax-payers:

there is no sign of wealth
to be seized (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perpetual_traveler#Three_Flag_Theory).

when this politician was a transport manager,
where did he live?

when he was a governor,
did he live extravagantly?

blatantly flaunting... :tsk:

Rulers living in extreme austerity have always been highly respected by the people, it's a positive quality. Of course most of presidents don't do so but the opposite and Yakunovich is not the exception, so I find demagogic to use his mansion against him when the other presidents live in similar luxury.

not with stolen tax payer money they don't. presidents usually have a high salary, understandably so. if many of them decide to spend it on a mansion or a villa, it's their choice.
Yanukovich got that place by stealing from the state. that's the difference.

empirical evidence, please. not all presidents have businesses. and I doubt all of them take bribes, but that depends on what you consider a bribe.

I'm aware of how corrupt spain, Itally, greece, Ukraine etc. are. but there's no reason to project those presumptions towards all countries and all politically active peoples'.

For example, a big company that wants to get the concession to built, invest, buy lands... and pays the president to get the license for that and avoid the other companies who want to get this license. That's pretty common in most of countries.

Corruption in the high government places exists everywhere, even in the less corrupt countries, and this corruption is the less obvious and difficult to spot as is covered by the same people who are involved in it. But this doesn't means that doesn't exist, just that is by far less obvious than the "street" corruption like a police or a state officer asking for a bribe to common people.

Most likely sons and daughters of kolkhoz people. There's nothing more hilarious than dirt poor people who struck it rich. They feel this need to display their wealth (build the biggest mansion or have the most opulent decoration), you know just to show people who they're dealing with here :)

I know many people like that. One of them is from Moldova and he is making thousands a week here. Ok he is not very rich but still, he has never had that kind of money in his life but now he does. How did he change ? first he bought a huge gold chain which he wears on the outside of his ..sport pants, coat and snickers. So I when see him in the city he is usually wearing a sport suit and there is always this huge heavy chain to emphasize his importance and wealth, it looks quite hilarious. Secondly his manners have changed somewhat. While he is still a kolkhoznik, he appears to have added some royalty manners to himself. A funny combination ;)

Funny you said it... it's often not an idiot but a blunt dumbfuck with extremely primitive brains. All they have is the ability to see an opportunity and a bit of luck. A couple examples:

In 2000 I've meet a guy who had about 10 mil USD. He made it in 1990's. While working as a bouncer in a pub he had some extra money to spend. Some of his obviously smarter mates suggested him to buy a machine for bottling sunflower oil. It was a very easy business: buy large quantities of oil from producers, bottle it and sell to shops at much higher prices. He hired a couple of engineers to run the thing and a driver with truck for deliveries, that's it. No accounting, no taxes. A few months later he bought another machine, than one more later and was running like that for a little over a year. And all this time he kept working as a bouncer. When tax department started to ask questions he moved all the money to offshore company (again by simply hiring a much smarter fellows) and then abandoned all his productions and ran away. Ended up with a few million bucks in Florida living in a luxurious villa with Bruce Willis's villa down the road. Still as far as his personality goes he was one of the dumbest people I've met.

Another example is still in Russia. A guy was working as a truck driver in Siberian gold mines, got some good money out of it. Retired and moved to south of Russia permanently. There he hired about 10 smart guys with degree in economics and asked each of them to provide an investment plan within a months or two. Then out of 10 plans he had chosen one that he liked most and invested some of his money in it. Once he started getting returns within a few months he asked his hired brains to produce more plans and kept going on with it until he got insanely rich. But his mentality is still the same to this day - fucking dumb truck driver from Siberian mines.

In fact I think it's their dumbness is the main reason of their success. Where a smart fella will see all the risks and have a lot of doubts these primitives are simply to stupid to fully realize what's going on and just pushing forward blindly. Many will fail but eventually some got lucky and, given the fact of business vacuum after fall of USSR, end up having significant success. Unfortunately today most of people tend to associate wealth with brains and follow those with big money regardless of their personal qualities.

wood is not a popular material here at all. There is a reason why this russki company decided to buy Belgian bricks. There is a cult of bricks here, the less heat conductivity the better, also the more durable the better. The brick culture is quite insane here. While wood is not a popular material at all, no idea why. Maybe because we have a very wet climate and its not good for the wood or so ?
