The Ionian is a bit more CM I'd say. But maybe.

Yes. I think Ionians might be a good proxy for ancient Greeks since they have not experienced most of the genetic influxes that other Greeks have experienced. On 23andme Ionians appear to be more "southern" on the PCA plot than other mainland Greeks, but they have much less Near Eastern admixture than Aegean islanders, Cretans etc.

This implies to me that they have both evaded the Slavic influence, and have not mixed with Pontians, Anatolians, or other Near Easterners who have made their way to Greece for whatever reason. And they never had a largely Anatolian genetic base unlike Aegean islanders.

I've seen the K plots, mainlander greeks do score more northern but they are less near eastern than the islanders which have not picked any of the migrations at all, including the dudes from the population exchange.

Are you trying to tell me that ancient greeks were seriously more southern and near eastern?

In English, yes. Eptanisia (Septinisular) isn't a very common word for use in English.

Not really. Put a beard on any greek old man and he's suddenly Lycurgus or Aristophanes.

Hmm. Ionian Islanders are people inhabiting the archipelago of the Ionian Sea. "Ionians"-- the ancient Greek "ethne" were the people of Athens and Ionic Coast. (Asia Minor). Hence the Iranian and Turkish and Arabic names for Greeks - Yunanistani- Yunani etc. "Ionians".

It's unclear what Melonhead originally meant by it though...

We also have a Athenian suburb named as 'Nea Ionia" founded by refugees from Asia Minor

Massive Trikala specimen.

Bet that in another situation he would be labelled Alpha Slavovlach.

See Sikeliot?
I post Rasoulis(Cretan) and this is what you get.

Personally, I do distinguish between this Alpinid look that I rightly or wrongly associate with Ancient Epirus, Socrates, and other " non Intruders". Slavovlach is generally reserved for the upside down triangle heads, square jaw, balto-gorids who Sikeliot sometimes posts.
