#Slanegirl And The Delusions Of Radical Feminism Permeating The Mainstream

The most talked about thing after the recent Eminem concert in Slane wasn’t the music. It was the fact that a teenage girl performed fellatio on two men in full view of concertgoers. Almost inevitably, given the proliferation of cameras on phones, the incidents were recorded. Whether this was by accident or design is unknown, though in one image she appears to be looking towards the camera and - as erotic thrills go - being photographed performing oral sex on multiple men seems no less outrageous than performing it in front of hundreds of men queueing to urinate. In any case, what’s done is done and in the cold light of day the girl plainly feels that she made a huge mistake. She is paying a dear price; at the time of writing she is in hospital, apparently under sedation.

By the following Monday #slanegirl was trending worldwide and an imagined narrative had begun to emerge. Outraged feminists and leftists complained relentlessly about double standards in Irish society. Especially common was the idea that the girl alone was being subjected to abuse while the boy was being treated as some sort of folk hero. For a couple of days I studied tweets relating to the incident and noticed very few tweets admonishing the girl. Yet the idea that there was sexism at work, that the public-at-large viewed ‘slanegirl’ as a whore and a disgrace while considering 'slaneboy' a 'legend' and a 'hero', prevailed.

Searching on Twitter using the words ‘slaneboy legend’ I counted 35 tweets dating from the day of the concert. Thirty-two tweets revealed outrage at society’s innate sexism. Three tweets viewed the boy in a positive light. Zero viewed the girl in a negative light. I used ‘slanegirl’ and ‘slut’ as search parameters but all I found were a barrage of tweets about slut-shaming with almost none calling the girl in question a slut. Radical feminists and those who have been brainwashed by their puerile ideology were embarrassingly quick to jump the gun, fantasising about the existence of a cultural misogyny that simply never reared its head.

Much criticism was saved for the person who captured the images with several shrill voices gleefully suggesting that the photographer and those who retweeted the images were guilty of distributing child pornography. It takes a special kind of indoctrination to compare consensual oral sex between 17 year olds to the systematic rape of children but that is the culture we live in, one in which a young woman is old enough to drink beer and expound girl power and perform oral sex on strangers for an audience but not old enough to live with the consequences of those actions, which have been relatively benign.

What about the small number of people who do consider behaving like a slut to be something shameful? We live in a society populated by mammals. Why are people shocked when we exhibit mammalian behaviour? In this I am not referring to the sexual proclivities of young Irish adults at pop concerts, rather the groupthink which dominates our discourse on topics like sex. Promiscuity has been frowned upon for millennia. The female contingent in a tribe of humans roaming around the grasslands of Africa would have been acutely sensitive to a ‘slut’ in their midst. A tribe with one beautiful female permitted to sleep with whomever she chose would be sure to cause jealousy among the males, leading to violence and murder, inefficiency and group starvation. So it became taboo, and although I personally disagree with the primitive vilification directed at slanegirl (and slaneboy), I am too pessimistic to expect complete tolerance from a species for whom such behaviour has been unacceptable since time immemorial. Any abuse resulting from this incident is simply a sector of society’s subconscious acknowledgement of her deviation from established sexual norms.

Given the liberal society Ireland is we should be thankful that the worst slanegirl can expect is disapproval from some of her peers. I expect and hope many more to be supportive.
