Does anyone want to give any input on the Mediterranean and Japanese diets. They are apparently the healthiest diets. The Japanese have the most people over the age of 100. Fish is the healthiest component. Mediterraneans eat a lot of Olive Oil which is very healthy. All of these things contribute to lower chances of Cancer, which increases life expectancy. I am not sure if it is all the diet, the sunlight in the Mediterranean also produces more Vitamin D which helps prevent cancer and promotes good health.

Please chime in!!

Not low brow enough. Try something about alpignids, or 'who's whitter: this light skinned Ethiopian or swarthy brit' or making some bull shit about the archaeological record that is grossly wrong etc.

then the remarks will fly in.

I do not like Feta at all. Tomatoes can be too acidic so can't have too much. The fish, garlic and olive oil are the best at preventing disease.

I know that eating a lot of meat especially Beef causes Colon Cancer. And I do not want to bash the Brits(I think I am allowed since I am British myself) but the British diet is one of the worst Meat and Potatoes with beer will rot your teeth. I can say this because my mom is English and her teeth are god awful. Plus Britain has quite high cancer rates, I think this could be due to the diet and the terribly underfunded NHS.

I hope this was not low brow.

Yes. Not for everything, but I wouldn't conceive a salad or other things without olive oil. Even a simple tomato-rubbed bread toast claims for some good olive oil. In fact, I always know the Med area is over when I reach a place where they start to cook things with butter or similar stuff.

Since Iberia is by far the largest producer of olive oil, that's like perfect. My favourite, those made with arbequina olives (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arbequina). 100% Catalan olive oil.

That would cost an arm and leg in the states. Olive oil is very expensive, I think we have actually been get it cheaper lately since the economic situations in Spain and Greece are pretty bad right now.

I actually just made Tortellini covered with olive oil and butter, with sauteed mushrooms on top with asiago cheese. It was so good.

I tend to use olive oil with butter when cooking.

From what I know, many of the olive cultivars in California are with this type of olive. Since California has a Med weather, I guess it must be easy and could lead to cheaper local produce.

Yeah, California is our Mediterranean, however, they are going through one of their worst droughts in history so prices are going up.

I eat feta cheese, Garlic, olives, tomatoes every single day and a lot of meat. I eat fish around once or twice a week.
I eat tomatoes plain with feta, bread, and salt sometimes when I'm too lazy to cook something.

The most commonly understood version of the Mediteranean diet was presented by Dr. Walter Willett of Harvard University's School of Public Health in the mid-1990s. It is a diet based on "food patterns typical of Crete, much of the rest of Greece, and southern Italy in the early 1960s", according to Willett.

The traditional Mediterranean diet has been interpreted into a Pyramid with daily physical activity at its base. Regular physical activity is seen as essential for promoting healthy weight, fitness and well-being.

In ascending order, the Pyramid also includes:

* An abundance of food from plant sources, including fruits and vegetables, potatoes, breads and grains, beans, nuts and seeds. Common foods on this step include pasta, rice, couscous, and polenta.

* Emphasis on a variety of minimally processed and, wherever possible, seasonally fresh and locally grown foods. Common foods include olives, avocados, grapes, spinach, eggplant, tomatoes, broccoli, peppers, mushrooms, garlic, capers, almonds, walnuts, chick peas, white beans, lentils and other beans, and peanuts.

* Olive oil as the principle fat. Total fat can range from less than 25 percent to over 35 percent of calories, with saturated fat no more than 7 to 8 percent of calories.

* Daily consumption of low to moderate amounts of cheese and yogurt

* Weekly consumption of low to moderate amounts of fish. Common fish are shellfish and sardines.

* Weekly consumption of poultry, and from zero to four eggs per week including those used in cooking and baking.

* Sweets. Common sweets are pastries, ice cream and cookies

* Meat. Common meats are veal and lamb.

It's quite interesting that the base of the U.S. diet is often meat, but meat is at the top of the Mediterranean diet, recommended to be eaten less frequently than even sweets.

Alcohol, particularly red wine, may be consumed in moderation and with meals.

One of the main explanations for the beneficial effects of the diet is thought to be the large amount of olive oil which is seen as lowering cholesterol levels in the blood. It is also known to lower blood sugar levels and blood pressure. Research indicates that olive oil prevents peptic ulcers and is effective in treatment of peptic ulcer disease, and may be a factor in preventing cancer. The consumption of red wine is considered a possible factor, as it contains flavonoids with powerful antioxidant properties. Others suspect that is it not any one particular nutrient that confers the benefits, but rather the combination of nutrients found in this diet comprised of unprocessed foods.

The olive oil, nuts and fish of the diet contain beneficial omega-3 fatty acids. Studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids lower triglycerides and may provide an anti-inflammatory effect helping to stabilize blood vessel lining.

Most healthy (and tasty) meets come from birds. That's why the duck & red wine diet of South-West France works so well.

I myself am not big on veggies, but I eat olive oil (produced by the glorious Provençal master-race, say no to foreign oil !), cheese and wine (red and rosé) daily. I only drink one or two glasses a day, where my parents probably drink a bottle each.
