There are many things to do in Terceira Island. Among them are enjoying the natural beauty of the Island and discovering its history and wonderful monuments.

Things to do in Terceira Island are endless. Blessed by nature, the Island invites to outdoor activities. Its long history, influenced by its strategic position, is reflected on its cities and villages. The most important is Angra do Heroísmo, the capital classified as World Heritage by UNESCO in 1983.

My favourite things to do in Terceira Island

Terceira Island is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Its natural wonders are endless. Therefore one of my favourite things to do in Terceira Island is to go for a walk, just enjoying the magnificent landscape. From the many natural highlights I advise a visit to Cume Mountain volcano, the Ponta dos Mistérios, the Algar and Carvão Grottos. Not to miss are also the Negro Lake, the Caldeira Guilherme Moniz and the Furnas. One of the unforgettable things to do in Terceira Island is to observe the view from the Santa Bárbara Mountain, the highest point of the Island.

As said, Terceira Island has a magnificent past. Thus one of the best things to do in Terceira Island is to discovering its rich history. Its cities are marvelous. They had a sustainable growing. Besides, they still retain a special charm of the ancient prosperous days. This is mostly visible at Angra do Heroísmo. The narrow streets with well-preserved villas are delightful.

A visit to some iconic monuments is also included in the things to do in Terceira Island. On what concerns Heritage the Cathedral of Angra do Heroísmo is one of the highlights. The beauty of its Renaissance style stands out.

The Fortress of Saint John Baptist also known as the Fortress of Mount Brazil or Fort of Saint Philip is one of the commendatory things to do in Terceira Island. It was built to protect the moored ships from corsairs’ attacks.

The Boa Nova Hospital is also worthy of a visit. It is probably the oldest military hospital in the world. It was built by Spanish to take care of the military stationed at the Fortress of Saint John Baptist.

One of the best things to do in Terceira Island is a visit to the House Museum Vitorino Nemésio. He was one of the most important names of the Portuguese literature.

Terceira Island was first named as Island of Jesus Christ. However as it was the third Azorean Island to be discovered it took the name Terceira (The third)

Terceira Island is known as the “Lilac” Island.

Characterized for its curious elliptic shape, Terceira Island was first named as the island of Jesus Christ. However, as this Island was the third one to be discovered, it was commonly referred to as Terceira (“the third”).
Its Administrative seat is Angra do Heroísmo, declared World Patrimony in 1986 by UNESCO.

Terceira Island’s throughout the centuries

Terceira Island’s settlement began around 1450 under the captaincy of the Fleming Jácome de Bruges. The first settlements were established on Porto Judeu and Praia da Vitória areas. Only then other parts of the island were explored.

Agriculture boosted Terceira Island’s economy. The production of grains and the export of woad, a dye-yielding plant, were the main activities. The dye-yielding plants were also very important in Sao Miguel.

During the Discovery Age, between the 15th and the 16th centuries, Terceira Island worked as a port of call both for the galleons navigating from the Americas and India. Thus Terceira Island was a natural warehouse for gold, silver, diamonds and spices. This fact awoke the greed of English, Flemish and French pirates who attacked the Island innumerous times throughout the centuries.

Terceira stood by the Portuguese claims when the Spaniards came to the throne in 1580. Dom António, Crato’s Prior, the Portuguese pretender came to live on the Island. Therefore, the Spanish attacked Terceira Island several times. After having been defeated in 1581, in the “Salga” battle, the Spanish finally conquered the Island two years later. After the Restoration in 1640, Terceira recovered its position as one of the most important Portuguese ports.

Terceira Island was on the center of the struggles between the liberals and the absolutists during the 19th century. The Island supported the liberal cause right from the beginning. Therefore, it became their main base. It was from there that the liberal forces left to conquer Continental Portugal.

The importance of Terceira Island decreased progressively by the end of the 19th century. However its strategic geographical position led to the establishment of the American air base at Lajes.
