In a bizarre case involving a man who is seemingly obsessed with a basketball manga and its creator, the accused admits to making the threats and orchestrating a terror campaign against the popular comic book series. He also expects he will be severely punished for his crimes, as he has been looking for a way to kill himself.
36-year-old Hirofumi Watanabe is accused of making hateful campaigns for over a year against the basketball-themed Kuroko no Basuke (“Kuroko’s Basketball”) and its creator Tadatoshi Fujimaki. He sent threats to anyone who was organizing an event involving the manga, and even put a hydrogen sulfide-filled container at Sophia University in Tokyo, where the author graduated from. He told the Tokyo District Court that he admits to all the charges against him, and that he did it because he was obsessively jealous of Fujimaki and the success that his manga has achieved.
Coming from an abusive home and struggling with homosexuality, Watanabe was on the verge of commiting suicide when he found out about Fujimaki’s success and he felt that the manga was a “bully”, constantly reminding him of his failures and the hopelessness of his situation. “I thought that if I somehow managed to harass and depress him, I could drag him into my suicide journey,” he said. He is not apologetic about his actions, but knows he will have to go to prison and accept responsibility. He even admits that he will kill himself once he gets out of prison so that “society can rest assured that I won’t do anything stupid again.”
