It seems that this idiot never learns. Ever since the end of his sports career, Nykänen has been a tragicomic figure, but more and more simply tragic with each passing year and incident.

Mervi Tapola-Nykänen has filed for divorce 14 times, and the couple have remarried at least twice. Once in an interview Mervi said that she doesn't remember whether they're currently married or not.

Since Nykänen has a previous history of violence (he did 13 months for stabbing a man in the back), he's now looking at 3-5 years.

A four-time Olympic ski jump champion is being held on suspicion of attempting to murder his wife on Christmas Day.

Finnish legend Matti Nykanen, 46, was arrested after an incident that left his wife with head and hand injuries.

Mervi Tapola is reported to have fled their joint home and called police from a neighbour's house.

Known as the flying Finn, Mr Nykanen won three gold medals at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary.

His skiing achievements included winning gold and silver medals at the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics aged 21. He won five gold medals at world championships and 13 at Finnish championships.

But since quitting the competition circuit in the 1990s he has continued to make headlines with convictions for assault, reported alcohol abuse, and working as a musical performer and male stripper.

I have some sort of deep-seated sympathy for Matti Nykänen. This is sad news and I hope it's not true.

Last week Mervi Tapola-Nykänen filed him for divorce for the 15th time.

Later this month it will become clear if Matti Nykänen will have to face prison for his assault on his wife last december.

He's a legend, but he has chosen an awkward way of remaining in the newspapers.

Matti Nykänen given 16-month sentence for aggravated assault

The former ski-jumping Olympic Champion Matti Nykänen was sentenced to a prison term of one year and four months by the Pirkanmaa District Court on Tuesday morning, after he was convicted of aggravated assault. The sentence was not suspended.

Nykänen was also ordered to pay his then spouse more than EUR 6,600 in damages and a further EUR 3,600 in court costs.

The offence in question took place in Ylöjärvi in December 2009, when Nykänen caused bodily harm to his female partner with a bread knife.

The court did not believe Nykänen's assertion that the knife had been in the woman's hand and that he had merely sought to take it away from her.

The former sports star, who has had an unseemly and very public fall from grace since he ended his international career, has had persistent problems with alcohol and has been given prison sentences for assault on three previous occasions since 2004.

Nykänen is likely to appeal the latest decision to the Court of Appeal.

Matti Nykänen, now 47, is widely regarded as the greatest-ever ski-jumper.

He won four gold medals and one silver medal at the 1984 and 1988 Winter Olympics, and was also a multi-medallist at the Nordic Skiing World Championships between 1982 and 1989.

Unfortunately, his later life has been clouded by incidents that have made him a regular face on the front pages of the tabloids.
