Hello. I am interested in taking a DNA test to help me to know more about my family. With this test I hope to discover the genetic makeup (e.g. European, SSA, Asian etc), haplogroups (similarity with other Europeans - I know some give percent of French, British/Irish etc). Which is the best DNA test in your opinion (I know there exists 23andme but I know there are others).

I've done 23andme and Family Tree DNA, of the two 23andme is definitely the better deal. FTDNA costs more and will be able to more specifically identify your haplogroups, but 23andme gives you your raw data at the cheapest price I know of and provides a more well-rounded summary. With your raw data you can use Gedmatch and any other calculators you can find, or even send it to a genealogist.

They seem to charge $70+ for international shipping outside of the US

Ouf, I didn't know that. Family Finder on FTDNA seems improved from when I last checked, and it does give you raw data as well. Perhaps they don't have such a high shipping cost?
