If you’ve ever seen a confused cat confronting an indestructible lookalike in the mirror, then you may recognise the reaction of this alarmed arachnid.

There are not many mirrors in the Australian rainforest and so this jumping spider, also known as the Mopsus mormon, went on the defensive when it spotted its reflection in a camera lens.

The ‘surprised’ spider was filmed acting rather peculiarly after mistaking his reflection for a male rival.

‘These spiders have some of the best vision of any of the animal kingdom. Their telescopic vision is magnificent,’ Owen Seeman, from the Queensland Museum, told the Brisbane Times. (http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/queensland/surprised-spider-not-surprised-after-all-20140324-35e96.html)

‘What they see when you get a camera is a spider looking back at them in the lens and it’s another male spider.

‘If you set up a mirror in front of one of these spiders, they’ll put on their aggressive displays that they show to another male.’

The clip was filmed near the Babinda Boulders in Cairns, North Queensland.
