Τhey are people with confidence issues. It seems that they add anyone and accept everybody's friend requests.
I wouldn't add anyone I don't know . I have a little bit more than 400 friends, and that's because I have lived in 6 different places, Uni friends, colleauges,etc.
You can't just have 5 thousand ''friends''.

They're either too afraid to decline friend requests or they think they have some sort of status for having many Facebook friends.

I firstly see them as not being very smart and secondly see them as someone who places superficial value on projecting to others that they are successful people.
