View Full Version : Is my mother's genetic genealogy consistent with all German ancestry?

No, I'm not claiming my mom to be all German, but rather half. She has only ancestors from Belgium and Ireland on her mother's side, though her father is all German, well actually he's German and German-Bohemian. 2 German grandparents.

But I was thinking, although my mom is not 100% German, maybe her results are an ok "fit" for that. How does our genetic reports (directly from 23andme but also GEDMATCH calculators, Dr Mcdonald, AncestryDNA, etc.)measure up with people who are fully German? Just how comparable is my mom's DNA from someone who really is 100% German? Is it possible for someone like my mother to "pass" in Germany genetically despite not having a fully German heritage?

On 23andme mom has a 100% European ancestry composition with 29% "French & German" on speculative mode. We also cluster within the boundaries of the German reference samples (people with 4 German grandparents) on Global similarity although we do not plot in Germany on Dr Mcdonalds map.

On all of the GEDMATCH calculators, my mom and her two siblings always have a population distance of less than 10 to the German populations. And although German isn't always the #1, it's almost always within the top 5.

Here are my mom's population distances to the German populations on all of the GEDMATCH calcuators that have an oracle. If more than one German group was used (i.e German and German_V) I will give the lowest score.

Dodecad V3: 6.78
Dodecad k12b: 6.71
World9: 6
Dodecad K7b: 5.99
Eurogenes K13: 3.36
Eurogenes EUtest V2 K15: 3.07
Jtest: 2.65
EUtest: 2.4
MDLP World-22: 4.1
MDLP World: 2.93
MDLP K=5: 7.36
MDLP K=6: 9.19
MDLP K=7: 9.16
MDLP K=8: 8.57
MDLP K=9: 7.91
MDLP K=10: 7.56
MDLP K=11: 7.74
MDLP K=12: 7.38

One thing I have noticed is that she consistently tends to be much closer to the Eurogenes Germans than the sample of Germans used for the Dodecad and MDLP calculators. Could it have to do with sample size and/or what part of Germany the samples came from?
