24 February 2014 | in World University Championships,

LAUSANNE - May 2014 will be a historic date for FISU as the very first World University Championship in American Football will be organised. This new event will take place in the Swedish city of Uppsala, from May 1 to 11.

The Championship is almost here and the WUC department is sure that it will be great first event for this spectacular sport. After having done an extensive inspection visit in Uppsala, the WUC department knows that the Organising Committee is ready to organise a very good event.

Despite the woman’s tournament not taking place due to low participation interest, the men’s tournament will be of a really high level with six teams registered for the competition, some of them being the top world ranking teams.

As the organising country, Sweden will send a strong team, hoping to use the home crowd as an advantage. The next WUC hosts are Mexico, hoping to gain experience as they will be organising the second edition in Monterrey in 2016. Two other teams that have signed up are Finland and China. It will be the first international participation for China where American Football is now growing fast, becoming more and more popular. Japan has also confirmed its participation and being the actual 3rd best team in the world on the IFAF ranking, it will certainly guarantee quality. Last but not least, the powerhouse USA will also compete for the first World University Champion title.

FISU and the Organising Committee are really happy to have the home country of this sport participating to this first event. This will certainly raise the competition level but also, more importantly, the level of interest – three of the six teams registered are actually ranked amongst the five best ranked countries in the world.

The competition format will consist of a group phase with two groups of three teams, followed by semi-finals and final. The draw of the groups will take place in the FISU headquarters (Lausanne) on 2 April. More information is available on the official website of the competition www.uppsala2014.com.

Indeed. China was really a surprise. Who would of thought they played american football?
They seem to have a ''decent'' team in terms of size.

Mexico's MVP: "We are here to win the tournament"

2014-05-02 22:15

Alejandro Garcia Blancas, QB, was elected MVP for Mexico in the opening win against Sweden. Read the interview with him here.

Congratulations Alejandro to a great win against Sweden and for being elected MVP in the opening game. What does it feel like to get that award?
- I share this award with my team. We work hard together and the award is a result of great teamwork.
What is your impression of the tournament so far?
- The entire team is very excited to get here. The championship is of great importance for Mexico and our sponsors and we come here to win the tournament.
What do you think about Team Mexicos appearance in this game?
- We had to work hard and overall we are satisfied. There are some errors that we have to do better and step up until next game when we are against Finland.
Your opponents today were Team Sweden. What are your thoughts about their game?
- They are a strong team and very physical. They have a lot of body but our ability and quickness made the difference today.
What can we expect of team Mexico in the continuation of the championship?
- We come here to win the tournament and become world champions. To reach that goal we have to continue work hard and raise all mistakes and keep focus. If we do that we will succeed.

Mexico beats Finland with 53-0

In a cloudy Uppsala, Mexico had an easy journey to beat Finland with 53-0. The Mexico team once again showed their speed like they did in the game against Sweden on Friday evening.

The finish head coach, Tero Virtanen, is already looking to the game against Sweden and during the press conference after the Mexico game he said “We are looking forward to be the party spoiler for Sweden in their efforts to win a medal, we want it too”.

Horacio Garcia, the head coach for Mexico was of course pleased to have won and being able to use all three QBs but he also expressed, “We gotta step up in every way in order for us to beat Japan on Sunday”.

2292 watched the game online.

Guys the final game is tomorrow. Hopefully Mexico brings the championship to the Americas. It is not going to be a cakewalk, the Japs kicked Mexico out of the IFAF world championship in Austria back in 2011.
