The Piast dynasty was the first historical ruling dynasty of Poland. The first documented Polish monarch was Prince Mieszko I (c. 930–992). The Piasts' royal rule in Poland ended in 1370 with the death of king Casimir III the Great.

Branches of the Piast dynasty continued to rule in the Duchy of Masovia and in the Duchies of Silesia, until the last male Silesian Piast died in 1675. The Piasts intermarried with several noble lines of Europe, and possessed numerous titles, some within the Holy Roman Empire.

Jan Matejko (author of this portraits) analysed some of their skulls to make them but it's hard to estimate how accurate this work was.

Jan Matejko (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_Matejko), the author of these portraits was a great Polish painter, but not an anthropologist. Even though he saw some sculls of the kings from Piast dynasty, he wasn't able to reconstruct how they looked like due to the lack of such knowledge. Most portraits of early Polish rulers from his great work "The gallery of Polish kings" (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Jan_Matejko#Poczet_kr.C3.B3l.C3.B3w_Polski_.28Gall ery_of_Polish_kings.29) were based on his own imagination regarding their look, but the details of their clothes, insignia, weapon, coats of arms etc. were the subject of his research and in-depth studies and reconstructed with utmost care and precision.
