They are not losers, sometimes people prefer to be alone. A loser can also be surrounded by a bunch of other losers.

I was always a bit wary of the Moomins when I was younger. Their faces were too big to be entirely trusted. To be fair to the Moomins (whom I would not wish to offend) it wasn't just them, but also others of their ilk. I would certainly not feel relaxed sitting opposite a giant one in a restaurant whilst it watched me eat :twitch00:

My perception is that large Asian cities are too busy and stressful and people get self absorbed. Similar trend can be seen in LA, people are too much in a rush and miss everything around them.

I always admired Japan but also found it weird. It's kinda sad though, that there are losers like this but they also need someone to comfort them maybe it's some kind of a cartoon character/stuffed animal. When I feel lonely I do play my pokemon games, I am not a loser though but can understand why the restaurant did it, they probably understand the psyche behind this and hence they did it.

adds up actually. Japan has one of the lowest fertility rates in the world:

Good news however for Japan's stuffed animal market.;)

Most of the time when I meet Japanese guys (from Japan, not Jap-Am), I usually wonder how they are descended from samurais.

When I was there back in 2012 I honestly found the modern culture to be rather degenerate. Japan's old culture was so beautiful and amazing. Granted, aspects of it still persist but I find what exists culturally in Japan today a near and complete utter erosion of the old ways.

I heard most of the samurai class were obliterated though during the 'transition era'. For obvious reasons I suppose. The current culture has an obnoxious vibe to it and awkward femininity. You gotta like anime and tons, and tons of neon lights. Plus vending machines every freakin' where and have a strange feminine air to you even if you are a man.

To be honest, I really hate Japanese pop culture. Even as a kid, I never got into any of the anime or crap like that. I was always very averse to that, it really annoyed me when people would think I was into it just because I was Asian (and frankly, has nothing to do with me as it isn't my heritage anyways). I do like traditional Japanese culture, so it's not a matter of historical animosity for me. But I just find modern Japanese culture very weird, nihilistic, socially awkward and effeminate (in all the wrong ways), a celebration of social retardation basically. I don't relate to it at any level, in fact, I'm very hostile towards it.

"Table for one? Restaurant offers giant stuffed animals for company
In an attempt to combat loneliness, a restaurant in Japan is offering its solo diners enormous stuffed animals to sit opposite"

So to combat loneliness one just have to get a teddy.A Dog I could understand.

I wonder If after dinner they go to the payee house for a coffee.

I think their society is too constrained in many ways. They need to strike out a balance of sorts. That reminds me, if I ever have to raise sons of my own, I don't want them to get into the socially awkward crap I used to do when I was a kid and in my teens. It's self-destructive in many ways and I don't want them to end up the way I almost used to end up.

You don't want to end up like these guys and you shouldn't wish it on your children.

Why?

Because they have been educated and indoctrinated to be submissive. Any masculinity, or agressiveness typical of men is looked down on. Patriotism is also labeled a bad thing. They are also taught to never be direct. If you are boring, or disliked Japanese will never tell you. And same if they like you, they will never tell you that.
Being manly is also a bad thing since restaurants, bathouses, garages etc will refuse to serve you and will ask you to leave.
Finding a job is almost impossible if masculine. The Japanese men are demanded to be submissive at work, and trough their life, bowing to everyone and anyone, which instills the feeling of servitude and submission, disabling large amount of men in Japan from functioning properly, yet unable to express that, they retire into their own world of hentai, comics, dolls and imaginary girlfriends.

On the flip sides, Japanese women find it extremely hard (just like most other women) to be attracted to a submissive male, which is why foreigners in Japan have such an easy time with women there.

These sort of things become common when people in a society become more and more isolated from one another. That's unfortunately a huge issue in East Asia today.

Culture, they have hive mentality. Can't interact one-on-one.

I think there is a lot of social isolation in Japan. Privacy is of premiere importance, which is odd because of, or maybe directly tied to their extremely high population density. Also, there is a culture of extreme politeness to the point that it is rare that Japanese are very straightforward. It seems many operate behind a social facade, most cultures do this, but its extreme in Japan, so it's hard to get to know what that person is really thinking.

There's regional identities and cultures within Japan like in China. I hear Western Japanese men tend to be more direct and straightforward than their eastern counterparts. Tokyo was dominated by a samurai culture while Osaka was dominated by a mercantile culture.

True. I heard people from the Kansai region, centered around Osaka are a lot more straightforward and down to earth than those from Tokyo.

It's said that Kansai region had a large Chinese immigrant population somewhere around the 8th century. Many Kansai people (and Japanese further to the west) tend to look more like northern Chinese and Koreans.

Japanese work 50 hours per week on average for $1500 per month on average. But I'm talking to a US American, nation of the workaholics so that doesn't really impress (except for the meagre wages).

But at least Americans show their emotions in public, whereas in Japan that is more a private matter between people who know each other very well. Japan is very cold and obsessed about 'not being of bother to others'. It has pros, but comes with obvious cons. IMO, one of the greatest contributors to their high suicide rates.

To be fair though, every culture, including all Western cultures have sub-cultures and sub-groups that are abnormal or "sick", so Japan's definitely not alone there. It's always easier to judge from the outside.
