Romania to promote Holocaust remembrance to combat anti-Semitism

BUCHAREST, May 7 - Romanian chamber of deputies' speaker Valeriu Zgonea on Wednesday said authorities would promote Holocaust remembrance and research to combat anti-Semitism and other forms of racism and xenophobia.

"The lessons of the past must always stay vivid in the minds and souls of us all," Zgonea said addressing a conference marking the 70th anniversary of the deportation of Jews from northern Transylvania.

"We have a responsibility to prevent the repeat of such events, to combat anti-Semitism, intolerance, xenophobia, racism, any form of discrimination, extremism, chauvinism and hatred of any kind, but especially racially motivated hate," he added.

May marks 70 years since, after the annexation of Romania's northern Transylvania by Horthyst Hungary, around 132,000 Jews of northern Transylvania were deported to concentration camps at Auschwitz.

A series of commemorative events are being organized, followed by the unveiling of 12 commemorative plaques in the train stations of northern Transylvania from which, in May 1944, Jews were sent to Nazi concentration camps.
