The thread I had opened, quite informative, with crowd pictures, is missing. It is a good one, since some areas of Brazil, particularly those of Northeast, tend to be highly misrepresented even in Brazil.

Cangaço (Portuguese pronunciation: [kɐ̃ˈɡasu]) is the name given to a form of "social banditry" in the Northeast of Brazil in late 19th and early 20th centuries. This region of Brazil is known for its aridness and hardships, and in a form of reaction against the domination of the land owners and the government many men and women decided to become nomadic bandits, roaming the hinterlands seeking money, food and revenge.By 1834, the term cangaceiro was already used to refer to bands of poor peasants who inhabited the northeastern deserts, wearing leather clothing and hats, carrying carbines, revolvers, shotguns, and long narrow knives known as peixeiras. "Cangaceiro" was a pejorative expression, such as jagunço, cabra, or bandoleiro, meaning a person who could not adapt himself to the coastal lifestyle. By this time, these misfits divided themselves into basically two groups – the jagunços, mercenary rude hitmen who worked for whoever paid the highest price, usually land-owners who wanted to protect or expand their territorial limits and also deal with farm workers; and the cangaceiros, "social bandits" who were supported by the poor, who fed them and protected them against the Law Enforcement agencies, known as volantes, sent by the government to stop them. One of the most common reasons why young people joined the cangaço was to avenge the family honor. This was the case of Jesuíno Brilhante, a famous cangaceiro from Rio Grande do Norte who helped the victims of the great drought of 1877 and who died in a shoot-out with the police in Paraíba. Another famous cangaceiro, Sinhô Pereira, joined the cangaço in order to avenge the murder of his brother, Né Pereira, in Serra Talhada, Pernambuco's outback.

Eles são os últimos de um passado recente, que nossos filhos e netos apenas conhecerão pelas aulas e pelos livros. Seu Arlindo, o cangaceiro Candeeiro e Dona Aristéia integram a última geração de contemporâneos a Lampião e Maria Bonita. Na cabeça, hoje fraca e com algumas lacunas, memórias e reticências de um passado por vezes dificil de lembrar desses patrimônios vivos da história do Nordeste. Apenas Arlindo e Candeeiro conviveram diretamente com Maria Bonita. O primeiro, de 90 anos, era criança quando ou pai, um estabilizado fazendeiro na época, recebia o bando de Lampião com festas e banquetes. Com sorriso no rosto e boa vontade, ele conta sobre a época em que a rainha do cangaço conversava com a mãe e outras mulheres da família enquanto os homens cantavam, bebiam e dançavam. As visitas às terras da família de Arlindo Grande, na zona rural de Paulo Afonso (BA), eram frequentes. O cangaceiro Candeeiro hoje é mais conhecido como Seu Né. Com a saúde debilitada e dificuldades de fala, ele, que tem 96 anos, lembra de quando entrou para o bando de Lampião ainda adolescente e que o apelido de "Candeeiro" lhe foi dado pelo rei do cangaço devido à energia e disposição apresentados pelo jovem cangaceiro. Ele esteve em Angicos (AL) e sobreviveu por um golpe do destino: na noite do ataque, Lampião o mandou pegar uma encomenda de armas e munições. Poucas horas depois, acontecia o cerco das volantes. Dona Aristéia não conheceu o casal mais famoso do cangaço. Fazia parte de outro bando, liderado pelo cangaceiro Moreno. Mas ela, assim como centenas de mulheres naquela época, é mais uma Maria. Aristéia Soares é uma das duas últimas cangaceiras vivas. As respostas rudes e rápidas, que num primeiro momento são vistas com antipatia, podem ser interpretadas como a resistência de lembrar as inquietações do passado. Essas inquietações também podem ser traduzidas nas frequentes reticências nas respostas e nas falas: o cotidiano dificil, a morte da irmã mais velha (também cangaceira) e do companheiro Catingueira num confronto com volantes, a amizade com a cangaceira Durvinha, esposa do líder do grupo.

A lot of the northerners and inland regions tend to have noticeable Amerindian, much more than the coasts.

Significant African influence is confined to Minas, Rio, Bahia, and a few coastal areas in Northeast Brazil, like in Pernambuco. Overall, it is exaggerated abroad, to the point of distorting the reality of Brazil. International media rarely shows Brazilians other than those of the poorer neighbourhoods of Salvador and Rio, the two most African influenced places in Brazil. If you travel to Central West, Northern Brazil and large parts of Northeast Brazil, you'll have hard time finding someone of pred. African heritage. They're present, but they're trully a very small minority in those areas.

To show our diversity, and to contrast it to those of Itaquerão, and out of Lucinho's request, these are pics of Rocinha (one of our most famous slums) and of Piscinão de Ramos (a popular destination for the lower classes of Rio to enjoy their free time).

Only around 6% of Brazilians live in favelas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Favelas#cite_note-10): however, they tend to receive an enormous attention of the international media, to the point of making some abroad to believe they are more common than they actually are. Rocinha is one of the most preferred targets of the international media when portraying Brazil, often in a bigoted and misleading way. Anyway, the pics I posted and the documentary are an attempt of giving a less biased representation of the dwellers and the reality of Rocinha IMO.

Most people are decent, just poor, living in more precarious conditions. and unfortunately have to endure crime.

South is 74% (The least one) to 90 (the most one) european.
