View Full Version : Liquorice, do you like it?

And with that I mean the black European kind, not those strange red things they sell in the US. How dare they call those things liquorice? Anyway, liquorice has always been my favourite candy ever since I was little. I used to prefer the super duper ultra salty ones, but now I like the slightly salty liquorice more. Especially these liquorice toffees :heartbea::

http://www.hetzoethoudertje.nl/images/2205_drop_toffee.gif

These are sooo good! You should definitely try them out when you are in the Netherlands!! Liquorice toffee is my ultimate guilty pleassure! But.. I ones tried English/Brittish liquorice toffees and they were quite dissapointing. They were black, smelled like liquorice and vaguely also tasted like it, but the overal taste was quite dissapointing and bland. I noticed that most English liquorice was like this.. I used to think liquorice was a Pan-European thing but it seems like only the Netherlands, Scandinavia/Finland and Germany to a certain degree appreciate 'real' liquorice.

So how about you and your country? Do you like it and/or is it commonly consumed in your culture?

You are from the US, I wonder if you have ever tasted European liquorice and know what we are talking about? :P I have tried US liquorice, those red and black sticks and also some other liquorice flavoured candy and It was super weird and very different from the liquorice here. It's candy, candy is rarely healthy. But how do you know it's overly sweet when you haven't tasted it (I am assuming you didn't)?

Ooh oops, I misread your post. You meant that it looks overly sweet, of course. Well liquorice has a unique taste. It's not only sweet but also salty..

Because it looks very artificial. Also, it has Glycyrrhizin. Things that are too sweet give me migraine.

I wouldn't say they make me nauseous, but I do feel a little queasy after having them. I don't get the same with the herrings. Those I can eat by the bucketload. I went through this crazy liquorice phase where I was eating a packet of herrings each day for over a month.

Yeah same here, I can eat a lot of those herrings without a problem, but the kokindjes? Meh. Perhaps it's the molasses taste in the kokindjes? I am not a big fan of molasses taste in liquorice, I like a more clear liquorice taste if you get what I mean.

Though, I do like these a lot:

So I've been looking online for some liquorice toffee recipes and came across a few American ones. The strange thing is, they make toffee with anise extract or flavour, add some black food coloring and call it liquorice? Anise, although somewhat similar to liquorice, is not liquorice.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwyrSyzbM-Q

And then this Aussie video. Same thing. Adding anise (anus? lol) extract and calling it liquorice. And liquorice expensive, really? I am starting to think that some of these New Worlders in this thread never actually had real liquorice. 8)

Far less so. It's just available here in many variants (no idea how big the variety is though). However, we have the stereotype about Dutch people that they eat liquorice by the tons. :) That alone says enough I think.

When kids in Turkey want to sip from their parents' coffee, Turkish parents usually tell them that if they drink coffee, they will turn black. My mother on the other hand used to tell me that I would turn black if I kept eating all that liquorice. I knew she didn't mean that in a good way but I didn't get why (thought it was pretty coool to turn black) So I kept eating my licorice while eagerly waiting for the transformation to happen. :D

It also says 'liquorice flavour'. They use molasses to marinate the tobacco and add the flavour. It's basically tobacco-molasses you smoke.

I've tried it once, and it's liquorice flavour alright. Not that good, I prefer liquorice candy. :p

You are from the US, I wonder if you have ever tasted European liquorice and know what we are talking about? :P I have tried US liquorice, those red and black sticks and also some other liquorice flavoured candy and It was super weird and very different from the liquorice here. It was sweet, but with only a very vague liquorice taste/smell. You can't really compare it with the candy here..

There's a good reason for that. Most American "liquorice" contains NO liquorice at all. It is favored with anise seed which bears a very vague resemblance in flavor to liquorice. Old-fashioned liquorice which was used to soothe coughs and sore throats, was made with real liquorice root and was actually slightly bitter, definitely not everyone's dish of tea ! Most Americans, at least of the present generation, have no idea of what real liquorice tastes like, having never encountered it.

By itself, liquorice isn't sweet at all. Most forms of it which are readily available have been sweetened, some very much, others very little.

Svipdag
06-07-2014, 01:11 AM
I think that real liquorice is best slightly sweetened, enough to offset the bitterness, NOT as toffee which contains too much molasses.
Actually, if blackstrap molasses were used, it would probably taste fairly authentic. At least it wouldn't be cloyingly sweet. The least sweet liquorice I can find is the liquorice I like best.

Azalea
06-07-2014, 01:14 AM
The toffee I am eating (the one in the OP) does not contain molasses. It does contain a lot of sugar obviously (it's, candy, what did you expect :P), but no to very little molasses. It also has the perfect balance between liquorice and ammonium chloride.

The outside is molasses liquorice, the inside is a filling of mostly ammonium chloride, just so you know this is not ordinary liquorice. They are called Heksehyl and are originally Scandinavian I believe.

Yes, that's liquorice too. The cables here in NL are mostly sweet liquorice and rarely salty, they most of the time don't contain ammonium chlorid either. Another thing is that they taste like molasses a lot. I really don't like that. It has a bitter molasses and little liquorice taste, similar to English liquorice. Really not my thing (unless I haven't had liquorice in years perhaps).
