This is inspired by another thread about Sardinia.. http://www.theapricity.com/forum/showthread.php?125345-Facts-and-Trivias-about-Sardinia&highlight=sardinia

I will be posting some fun facts from different websites hopefully to spread information of Israel..

Israel, the 100th smallest country, with less than 1/1000th of the world's population, can make claim to the following:

Israel has the highest ratio of university degrees to the population in the world.

Israel produces more scientific papers per capita than any other nation by a large margin -109 per 10,000 people - as well as one of the highest per capita rates of patents filed.

In proportion to its population, Israel has the largest number of startup companies in the world. In absolute terms, Israel has the largest number of startup companies than any other country in the world, except the US (3,500 companies mostly in hi-tech).

Israel is ranked #2 in the world for venture capital funds right behind the US.

Outside the United States and Canada, Israel has the largest number of NASDAQ listed companies.

Israel has the highest average living standards in the Middle East. The per capita income in 2000 was over $17,500, exceeding that of the UK.

With an aerial arsenal of over 250 F-16s, Israel has the largest fleet of the aircraft outside of the US.

Israel's $100 billion economy is larger than all of its immediate neighbors combined.

On a per capita basis, Israel has the largest number of biotech start-ups.

Israel has the largest raptor migration in the world, with hundreds of thousands of African birds of prey crossing as they fan out into Asia.

Twenty-four percent of Israel's workforce holds university degrees - ranking third in the industrialized world, after the United States and Holland - and 12 percent hold advanced degrees.

Israel is the only liberal democracy in the Middle East.

In 1984 and 1991, Israel airlifted a total of 22,000 Ethiopian Jews at risk in Ethiopia to safety in Israel.

When Golda Meir was elected Prime Minister of Israel in 1969, she became the world's second elected female leader in modern times.

When the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya was bombed in 1998, Israeli rescue teams were on the scene within a day - and saved three victims from the rubble.

Israel has the third highest rate of entrepreneurship - and the highest rate among women and among people over 55 - in the world.

Relative to its population, Israel is the largest immigrant-absorbing nation on earth. Immigrants come in search of democracy, religious freedom, and economic opportunity.

Israel was the first nation in the world to adopt the Kimberly process, an international standard that certifies diamonds as "conflict free."

According to industry officials, Israel designed the airline industry's most impenetrable flight security. U.S. officials now look to Israel for advice on how to handle airborne security threats.

Israel's Maccabi basketball team won the European championships in 2001.

Israeli tennis player Anna Smashnova is the 15th ranked female player in the world.

Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers was produced by Haim Saban, an Israeli whose family fled persecution in Egypt.

In 1991, during the Gulf War, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra played a concert wearing gas masks as scud missiles fired by Saddam Hussein fell on Tel Aviv.

Israel has the world's second highest per capita of new books.

Israel is the only country in the world that entered the 21st century with a net gain in its number of trees.

Israel has more museums per capita than any other country.

Israel has two official languages: Hebrew and Arabic.

Medicine...

Israeli scientists developed the first fully computerized, no-radiation, diagnostic instrumentation for breast cancer.

An Israeli company developed a computerized system for ensuring proper administration of medications, thus removing human error from medical treatment. Every year in U.S. hospitals 7,000 patients die from treatment mistakes.

Israel's Givun imaging developed the first ingestible video camera, so small it fits inside a pill. Used to view the small intestine from the inside, the camera helps doctors diagnose cancer and digestive disorders.

Researchers in Israel developed a new device that directly helps the heart pump blood, an innovation with the potential to save lives among those with congestive heart failure. The new device is synchronized with the heart's mechanical operations through a sophisticated system of sensors.

Technology...
With more than 3,000 high-tech companies and start-ups, Israel has the highest concentration of hi-tech companies in the world (apart from the Silicon Valley).

In response to serious water shortages, Israeli engineers and agriculturalists developed a revolutionary drip irrigation system to minimize the amount of water used to grow crops.

Israel has the highest percentage in the world of home computers per capita.

Israel leads the world in the number of scientists and technicians in the workforce, with 145 per 10,000, as opposed to 85 in the U.S., over 70 in Japan, and less than 60 in Germany. With over 25% of its work force employed in technical professions. Israel places first in this category as well.

The cell phone was developed in Israel by Motorola, which has its largest development center in Israel.

The technology for AOL Instant Messenger was developed in 1996 by four young Israelis.

A new acne treatment developed in Israel, the ClearLight device, produces a high-intensity, ultraviolet-light-free, narrow-band blue light that causes acne bacteria to self-destruct - all without damaging surroundings skin or tissue.

An Israeli company was the first to develop and install a large-scale solar-powered and fully functional electricity generating plant, in southern California's Mojave desert.

A people had been inhabiting the land for millennia before you imperialists ever arrived...

The fact that Israel coerced 800,000+ Palestinians from their homes reinforces this point.

Ahh the Nakba.. First i will correct you by saying it is ESTIMATED 700,000 not 800,000..

Also it was not all Israel's fault, they were also encouraged to leave by other arabs (they were told they would come back and the zionist will be gone)... Do you really think 716,700 (the Jewish population of Israel in 1948) was able to kick out 800,000 (lol) palestinians while fighting off arabs at the same time and dealing with conflicts at the borders?

It's always so hard to pick a side when you see Arabs/Palestinians arguing with Israelis.

One is like an incoherent angry teenager who just got his first boost of testosterone production, while the other is that smooth-talking creepy old guy who everyone knows is a kiddy fiddler but no one dares to confront because he's the CEO of the company where you and your buddies work.

I've been. Yad Vashem is pretty cool but apart from that they're generally not about the Holocaust. However, they are usually quite small. Certainly nothing on the British Museum, or the Natural History Museums of New York, Berlin, or London. Having 100 'our town' museums doesn't really count in my books. Apart from Yad Vashem their museums are all kind of insignificant.

Yes most sects of Islam have to reform accept the Koranists from my view, but it's difficult.

Do you mean those who don't accept the Hadiths etc?

I think they're the worst.

Islam evolved into a relatively pluralistic religion under the Abbasids, until destroyed by the Mongols. Ironically Muslims always refer to this as a Golden Age and use it as an example of how great Islam is but never seems to return to the Ijtihad of the period philosophically.

Why ?

Because abrogation as outlined in the Koran (Q.22:52) means that the violent passages override the peaceful ones due to the chronology of the Koran because the earlier chapters (Meccan Koran) are peaceful whereas the later ones (Medina Koran) are violent;

No, Israel were given about 5000km2 of Palestine by the countries of the UN violating the San Remo Conference of 1920 which promised all of Palestine to Israel.

Instead 89,342 km was illegally given to a Saudi family in 1921, creating Jordan which then took control of the West Bank (5,640km2) whilst Egypt took control of some more (Gaza). Arabs therefore controled about 95,000km2 of Palestine whilst Jews controlled 20,000km2 after the 1948 war.

The one fun fact missing is that Israel could not have existed without the international community. Without that assistance all of the mentioned would not have happened. A little gratitude and modesty might be in order.

Muslims say Islam cannot be reformed because it is perfect -_-

Muslims say a lot of things. They say the koran is perfect but to give just one example of a mistake Islam confuses Mary the mother of Jesus with Mary the sister of Moses (and in turn their fathers are misidentified as the same person).

You're not taking into account the fact the territory was ruled by Ottomans previously, and before that a series of other empires, and never had independence (the last time was when Jews were a majority).

http://www.allaboutturkey.com/img/ottoman-empire-1580.gif

Once the Ottomans lost the territory after their defeat in 1917 Britain and France were given mandate over the area ;

http://www.worldology.com/Iraq/images/post_war_iraq.jpg

The territory HAD been promised to Jews several times as Palestinians weren't, wrongly, considered a separate group to Syrians as it suited the Pan-Arabism of the time to pretend they were ethnic Arabs as admitting they were of Israelite origin was politically incorrect for several reasons including both Islamist, Pan-Arabism and anti-Zionism. This was also because the Palestinians themselves were ruled by foreign clans that had assumed leadership positions after the Islamic takeover of the area;

After Zionist elites made a deal with Britain for Palestine in exchange for getting the Americans involved in the world war. They wanted it in writing in case the Brits reneged, thus the Balfour declaration was born.

I remember having this debate with you before. I'd have to go hunt down the thread. I remember you showing me this video, but I showed you some evidence of only the Palestinians in towns bordering Jordan were asked to leave because the Arab allies wanted to set up a base camp there. I didn't save the evidence, but I could hunt it down, it' out there. I did happen to see this lately:

"There is no evidence to show that the Arab states and the AHC wanted a mass exodus or issued blanket orders or appeals to the Palestinians to flee their homes (though in certain areas the inhabitants of specific villages were ordered by Arab commanders or the AHC to leave, mainly for strategic reasons)." ("The Birth of the Palestinian Refugee Problem", p. 129)

Which basically is saying what I just said. There is more on this subject though. I do agree that Europeans did come in and mass immigrated to Palestine, a land where there were already a people, but this was mainly because of a deal Zionists in Britain made with the British over American involvement in the world war. Sure, the Jews were partially indigenous to the land, but there was a better way to go about it I think. There will not be peace until there is a complete and full two state solution, which I support.
