According to NPR, “In 2003, a survey of female veterans found that 30 percent said they were raped in the military

. A 2004 study of veterans who were seeking help for post-traumatic stress disorder found that 71 percent of the women said they were sexually assaulted or raped while serving. And a 1995 study of female veterans of the Gulf and earlier wars, found that 90 percent had been sexually harassed.”

The BBC recently reported on The Lonely Soldier: The Private War of Women Serving in Iraq by Helen Benedict. This book examines the extreme difficulties female soldiers have in serving abroad. Benedict interviewed several women in the military to get a deeper understanding of the issue, and some of their stories were real eye openers.

Army specialist Chantelle Henneberry spoke of some of her experiences in Iraq, “Everybody’s supposed to have a battle buddy in the army, and females are supposed to have one to go to the latrines with, or to the showers – that’s so you don’t get raped by one of the men on your own side. But because I was the only female there, I didn’t have a battle buddy. My battle buddy was my gun and my knife.”

Another study concluded that 90% of all women serving are sexually harassed. Another one estimates that 90% of all the rapes do not get reported, despite supposedly easier ways to report the crime with confidentiality since 2005. Either way, this appears to be an epidemic that needs to be dealt with.

I wonder about one thing. If a female soldier is able to become a victim of sexual abuse, doesn't it mean that she is not prepared to go to the war? In my opinion she should cut off a dick of predator and fed him by it - then she would be 100% prepared.

I doubt Dahmer raped the man. Dahmer was a weak willed individual. He had to drug his victims to rape them.

Women shouldn't be in the military.

By that time Dahmer was an accomplished murderer who had beat a hitchhiker to death. He raped him, dude. Repeatedly. Happens 20 times a day to males in the military.

Well, I was asking hypothetically, who many years will he get for such crime. If it avoids courts, it is even bigger shit.

Sometimes I have a feeling that everyone can join the American army - like no psychological tests etc. Never heard about any similar situations in Polish army, personally.

These are the people who are expected to keep discipline. These men are on their watch.

True. Again, comparing to the Polish army, there was one situation with a discipline - but not on duty. My friend was working in a club, which was visited by three or four soldiers. For some reason (I forget which one), one of these soldiers took drugs and have beaten up my friend. Not seriously though, he was still able to drink. After that he visited police station and Żandarmeria Wojskowa (military police, whose main purpose is to take care of the criminals in the army) catched the guy, and his career was as far as I know stopped. This suggest there is a discipline, as many people here assume that if you wear a military uniform, you must deserve it. You will not deserve it by attacking those, who you sworn to protect.

I doubt if anyone would even dare to think about rape. But the guy was even more stupid if he took drugs - I don't know if he thought there will be no tests?
