He is similar to Sicilians especially those from isolated areas. I suspect with more Calabrese results turning up we'll see that his is nothing out of the ordinary.

Well he and that one Calabrian you share with from Catanzaro both score quite high in the Middle Eastern component on Ancestry Composition at 23andme while a few other Calabrians I share with from the Reggio di Calabria province on 23andme do not score as high as them. One of them is only 2.1% Middle Eastern and is 89.2% Italian. Why is there such a difference I wonder?

Isolation. On Dodecad and Eurogenes they may score similarly actually.. I almost wonder if those who score more Middle Eastern simply acquired it more recently. I don't fully trust 23andme's Ancestry Composition having seen now people with similar autosomal results on Eurogenes scoring radically differently on 23andme.

Yes I am sure that on the Eurogenes calculators at GEDmatch they all would score quite similarly. For some reason on Ancestry Composition at 23andme they do not though with some like my grandfather scoring a lot of Middle Eastern while others like that Italian from Reggio di Calabria I mentioned above scoring barely any Middle Eastern. I have wondered if my grandfather's high Middle Eastern score means more recent ancestry from either West Asia/Anatolia or the Near East before as well? I wonder how recent?

On Dodecad I have seen people from Reggio Calabria being amongst the highest in the West Asian components of all Italians I've seen, so I am unsure. But then on 23andme they aren't. Either way Reggio is considered to be an extension of Sicily on the mainland, and they have had a lot more contact with Greece than the rest of Calabria into the Middle Ages.
