A third of Somalis in Denmark have experienced personal discrimination according to an EU report.

Denmark comes towards the top of a list of countries in which hate crimes take place, with only Roma in the Czech Republic and Somalis in Finland worse off than Somalis in Denmark, according to an EU report.

In the report on selected minority groups in all of the member countries, a third of Somalis in Denmark say they have experienced serious racist assault, serious harassment or threats. The survey was based on 27,000 interviews across the European Union.

“Denmark has a major problem in relation to discrimination,” says Morten Kjaerum, head of the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights which carried out the survey.

“We see that the figures that we have previously worked with (...) were only the top, in fact only the very top of the iceberg,” he says.

Researcher not surprised
Mandana Zarrehparvar, who is head of the Department of Equality and Diversity is not surprised that Somalis are particular targets – and not only for ethnic Danes.

“Somalis are particularly vulnerable simply because of their very dark skin colour. They are lowest in the hierarchy, including among other ethnic groups,” says Zarrehparvar who undertook a survey of hate crime for Copenhagen Council.

Often heard
The Chairman of Somali Development Denmark is not surprised at the results either.

“This is something we often hear from people. Most have experienced verbal harassment, but many also experience physical aspects,” says Muhammed Maxamed Abshir.

Maxamed tells of women who are pushed in the street; a boy who was held around the neck and many who are shouted or spat at in buses or in the street. He says that racist harassment and threats are part of everyday life several places in Jutland.

Only some 80 percent of attacks on Somalis are reported to the police.

“They are afraid that the authorities won’t do anything and that things will just get worse. Many have complained without anything being done and that spreads from family to family. At the end of the day you learn to live with it,” says Maxamed.

Hate crime
“Denmark focuses too little on hate crime. The police should be trained to handle situations and investigate when hate crimes are reported,” says Zarrehparvar adding that minorities themselves must be aware of their rights and where they can seek help.

Others also harassed
Other minority groups also appear to be harassed. The National Association of Gays, Lesbians and Transgender people says that there are attacks each weekend. Also the Documentation and Advice Centre on Racial Discrimination says that Jews and Turks are affected.

The Socialist People’s Party has proposed a task force to inform and train police officers so that they are better able to register and solve hate crimes. The proposal is currently on its way through Parliament.

I fail to see a reason to be nice to minorities, especially those not native to your own land.

Aww.. poor imported minorities: so the Danes are cruel and racist towards you ? Well you know the drill: gather your belongings and bugger off !

Why should you possibly waste your time there then ? You don't have to live amongst those "cruel and racist" Danes and the Danes don't have to live amongst you.
Problem solved. Both parties are contented.

You'd think that would be enough to put them off coming?

If only it was.... :(

Perhaps people need to step up their "cruelty".. by denying benefits, homes, refusing to serve them in shops and constantly flashing airline tickets in their face at each and every opportunity...

Maybe if every immigrant is given a gift on arriving to their new country.. A one way ticket home! :D

I don't think the colour of their skin has the importance Mr. Zarrehparvar suggests. Having lived amongst them for long enough, and having had to endure their presence in Bristol, from public transport to shopping centres, I'd say they create themselves as targets for abuse and all round bad natured "hate crimes" very well.

I had one peanut head spit right in front of me the other day in town, and if it wasn't for the fact he had a whole branch of his fellow KP crew with him he would have had one right back at him.

Disgusting little animals. I feel no sympathy for them.

Caseworker named killer

Police still looking for murder weapon

Police are searching for a the knife used yesterday to kill a 56-year-old Caseworker and Local Counsellor Birthe Christiansen outside a job center in Holstebro.

A 28-year-old man has been detained and remanded in custody in connection with the murder. The man denies all charges.

“We would urge people to look for items on the route from Brogaardsvej 1, where the killing took place and up to the activity centre on Haralds Lethvej where the 28-year-old was detained an hour after the attack,” says Western Jutland Police Spokesman Michael Kjeldgaard.

“We would also like to hear from people who may have seen the man cycling in the area, which depending on the route taken is a stretch of about three kilometres,” Kjeldgaard says.

The 28-year-old was remanded in custody at a hearing yesterday, but has denied the charges.

“I can just say that I have not done this,” the man said.

A police officer has said that the caseworker suggested the name of her alleged attacker before she died.

Typical of Politiken not to write that the murderer was an immigrant. It's 28-year-old Somali.

Here is another English news bit

Job centre worker stabbed to death
Thursday, 28 January 2010 11:34 KR News

Client arrested after woman dies from stab wounds inflicted just yards from her place of work

A caseworker at a North Jutland job centre has been stabbed to death, allegedly by one of her own clients.

Birthe Christiansen, 56, was attacked in the parking lot of the Holstebro JobCenter on Wednesday morning.

Colleagues say they heard a commotion outside, but despite efforts to revive the woman at Herning Hospital, she later died of her injuries. The job centre has been closed for the day and the woman’s affected colleagues are being offered crisis counselling.

A 28-year-old Somali man, who was reportedly a client at the job centre, has been preliminarily charged with murder. He has pleaded not guilty.

The suspect was remanded into custody for four weeks at a hearing yesterday evening and will undergo mental evaluation. He has told police that he feels as if someone has been following him, breaking in to his home and trying to destroy his life for some time.

Police are hunting for the murder weapon and trying to determine a motive for the killing.

Christiansen had recently removed the man from a work placement set up for him because she had been told he had been violent toward a neighbour. The suspect told the hearing judge that he believed those who were following him were behind the caseworker’s decision.

The deceased caseworker was recently elected to represent the Social Democrats in the Struer Council, reports newspaper Dagbladet Holstebro-Struer. She sat on the technical and environmental committee since November and on Tuesday night had been elected to the town’s cultural committee as well.

This brutal murder happened the day after the other news, and the debate in public is now, not if Somalis are subject to hatred or not, but how much of a burden they are.

I don't know how the business is run over there, but here in the UK and certainly America, the journalists are well instructed in what they should be writing.

Here is some of what they have been instructed to adhere to.

On Oct. 6 at its National Convention in Seattle, the Society of Professional Journalists passed a resolution urging members and fellow journalists to take steps against racial profiling in their coverage of the war on terrorism and to reaffirm their commitment to:

Use language that is informative and not inflammatory;
Portray Muslims, Arabs and Middle Eastern and South Asian Americans in the richness of their diverse experiences;
Seek truth through a variety of voices and perspectives that help audiences understand the complexities of the events in Pennsylvania, New York City and Washington, D.C.

Guidelines

Visual images

Seek out people from a variety of ethnic and religious backgrounds when photographing Americans mourning those lost in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.
Seek out people from a variety of ethnic and religious backgrounds when photographing rescue and other public service workers and military personnel.
Do not represent Arab Americans and Muslims as monolithic groups. Avoid conveying the impression that all Arab Americans and Muslims wear traditional clothing.
Use photos and features to demystify veils, turbans and other cultural articles and customs.

Stories

Seek out and include Arabs and Arab Americans, Muslims, South Asians and men and women of Middle Eastern descent in all stories about the war, not just those about Arab and Muslim communities or racial profiling.
Cover the victims of harassment, murder and other hate crimes as thoroughly as you cover the victims of overt terrorist attacks.
Make an extra effort to include olive-complexioned and darker men and women, Sikhs, Muslims and devout religious people of all types in arts, business, society columns and all other news and feature coverage, not just stories about the crisis.
Seek out experts on military strategies, public safety, diplomacy, economics and other pertinent topics who run the spectrum of race, class, gender and geography.
When writing about terrorism, remember to include white supremacist, radical anti-abortionists and other groups with a history of such activity.
Do not imply that kneeling on the floor praying, listening to Arabic music or reciting from the Quran are peculiar activities.
When describing Islam, keep in mind there are large populations of Muslims around the world, including in Africa, Asia, Canada, Europe, India and the United States. Distinguish between various Muslim states; do not lump them together as in constructions such as “the fury of the Muslim world.”
Avoid using word combinations such as “Islamic terrorist” or “Muslim extremist” that are misleading because they link whole religions to criminal activity. Be specific: Alternate choices, depending on context, include “Al Qaeda terrorists” or, to describe the broad range of groups involved in Islamic politics, “political Islamists.”
Do not use religious characterizations as shorthand when geographic, political, socioeconomic or other distinctions might be more accurate.
Avoid using terms such as “jihad” unless you are certain of their precise meaning and include the context when they are used in quotations. The basic meaning of “jihad” is to exert oneself for the good of Islam and to better oneself.
Consult the Library of Congress guide for transliteration of Arabic names and Muslim or Arab words to the Roman alphabet. Use spellings preferred by the American Muslim Council, including “Muhammad,” “Quran,” and “Makkah,” not “Mecca.”
Regularly seek out a variety of perspectives for your opinion pieces. Check your coverage against the five Maynard Institute for Journalism Education fault lines of race and ethnicity, class, geography, gender and generation.
Ask men and women from within targeted communities to review your coverage and make suggestions.
