Baby boom puts us on top of birth rate league

Ireland's baby boom has secured its position as the EU country with the highest birth rate -- even in the expanded community.

The first demographic estimate of the EU27 published by Eurostat showed the birth rate here per 1,000 is 18.1, followed by the UK at 13, France at 12.9 and Estonia 12.2.

The lowest rate is in Germany at 8.3. Malta, Austria and Bulgaria are at 9.2.

The report also showed that the death rate in Ireland is the lowest at 6.1 per 1,000 followed by Cyprus at 6.6, Luxembourg 6.9 and Malta at 7.7. The country with the highest is Bulgaria where it is 14.2 per 1,000, Latvia 14 and Lithuania 13.2.

It means that Irish people can now look forward to living longer due to various factors including lifestyle and new treatments available for diseases.

Consequently, Ireland has the highest natural population growth of all the EU countries, +12.0 per 1,000. This contrasts with France at +4.5, Luxembourg at +4.3 and the UK at +3.6.

As of January 1, the population of the EU27 is 499.7 million.

The big question is... who's having the babies? The natives? The immigrants? And what is the ratio of these? That is, babies born to immigrants to babies born to natives.

I'll try and find that out as I'm interested to know too. Since the citizenship referendum changed the law the number of asylum seekers coming here to have babies has dropped, as it no longer entitles them to Irish citizenship. The vast majority of immigrants in Ireland are eastern European economic migrants, they're here for the short term to make money not to raise families so I doubt they're contributing too much to the rise in the birth rate. From my own personal experience I can tell you that there are still plenty of young Irish couples starting families. My mate is 21 and I'm off to his daughters Christening on Saturday :thumb001:

According to this (http://archives.tcm.ie/irishexaminer/2008/08/21/story70362.asp) foreign nationals account for 1 in every 6 births, it's worrying but it could be a lot worse. It still means that the native Irish population is the fastest growing in Europe.

For as long as I remember, Ireland has always had a large population growth rate compared to the rest of Europe.

This would only increase significantly with a Nationalist Government guiding the people back to decency. And thats without embracing the Diaspora, instead of spitting on them every chance they get - the free-staters that is.
