The face-brick home in Springs on Joburg’s East Rand from which police rescued four children they say were badly abused by their father.

THE brother and sister of the “Springs Monster” – an East Rand father who allegedly tortured his wife and five children whom he enslaved for more than a decade – are being questioned by police investigators.

An officer said of the father’s siblings: “They are critical. Their information will show where they [the family] lived, how they stayed under the radar, how the children remained invisible and why no one ever reported this heinous crime.”

The father is being held in custody, pending a bail hearing next week. He is facing charges of child abuse and assault with the intent to commit grievous bodily harm. His children and wife are now with relatives in safe houses.

The investigating officer, Warrant Officer Rudi Jansen, said no more arrests had been made.

“The case is sensitive. I cannot comment on who – like the mother or his siblings – may have known what or why people did nothing.

“Lots [of people] knew about this but did nothing. After the bail application the court will make a decision on certain things.”

Gauteng police spokesman Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said: “We are following up on certain information. It is sensitive. We cannot provide more details.”

As investigations intensify, a picture of the 36-year-old father, a used car salesman, is beginning to emerge. For years the man has allegedly led a clandestine existence, never settling in one place for long, keeping his children – two boys and three girls – chained up indoors and his wife constantly within sight.

Information from sources close to the investigation show that his children – aged 2, 4, 5, 11 and 16 – on paper apparently never existed, with their births allegedly unregistered and none ever enrolled at a creche, pre-school or school.

“From what we know on paper they were ghosts … nameless and faceless,” a police source said.

So intent was the father on hiding his children that he repeatedly moved them between rented houses across South Africa, spending several years at a time living in his brother’s caravan on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast. Information indicates that the father, born in Springs, met and married his wife, now 35, when she was 19 years old.

Little of their lives together is known.

The age of their eldest daughter, 16, indicates that she was born within months of her parents marrying, apparently in Springs.

Five years later their first son was born. It was shortly after his birth that the family apparently fled their rented home, for unknown reasons.

It is believed they moved to the Free State, where they lived for several years before moving again.

The man’s sister lives in the Free State town of Warden where the couple’s 11-year-old son – who raised the alarm about his and his siblings’ and mother’s imprisonment and torture – was found on Friday. His father had allegedly taken him there to prevent him speaking to police.

Information the eldest child has provided to police shows she remembers living in a caravan.

“She has memories of a bakkie often towing the caravan which she, her mother and some of her siblings were forced to stay in.

“She remembers it being in KwaZulu-Natal but apart from that she does not know where. She remembers being blindfolded and sometimes tied up,” a Springs child rights worker said.

She said the younger children had no recollection of where they had lived.

“Their existence was that of nomads … no friends, no roots.”

After leaving KwaZulu-Natal the family returned to Springs where they lived in a “normal house” in Paul Krugersoord.

“Compared to the house where the man was arrested, it is completely normal – not like the fortified home that the children and their mother were found in,” a policeman said.

A tenant at the Springs home from where the siblings were freed said the father was cagey about his past.

“Everything about him was secret. I knew he had a wife, but saw her only briefly.

“She would smile a bit but never engage. I saw a girl once, but was told she was visiting and when I tried to say hello she was taken inside.” – Graeme Hosken

Joburg man's house of torture exposed

EAST RAND – A 36-year-old businessman, who allegedly held his wife and five children captive in their Springs home in Johannesburg, will apply for bail, police told eNCA on Wednesday morning.

According to a report published in Beeld, the man allegedly assaulted and tortured his family for years. They were allegedly not allowed to leave the house and none of the children – aged between two and 16 – have ever been to school. Neighbours told the newspaper that they did not even know of the childrens' existence until they were rescued last Tuesday.

According to the article, last Monday an 11-year-old son escaped after the man threatened to kill him. They boy ran to neighbours who didn’t know who he was and so they took the bloodied child back to his father. The father then reportedly attacked the child, tried to drown him and then wrapped the injured boy in a blanket and hid him in the ceiling of a spare room.

The neighbours in the meantime informed police about the mysterious appearance of a child, and the house was raided in a sting operation that took place last week Tuesday.

Investigating officer Warrant Officer Rudi Jansen told the paper that a team had gone out to investigate. He was quoted as saying: “We found four other children. The house was filthy and rats were running around everywhere while the children just sat. We found the suspect at the house and we wanted to know where his injured 11-year-old son was. He told us the boy had run away again. We immediately removed the other children. The suspect began crying and claimed that he cared a lot, but we suspected foul play”.

In the meantime the father had removed the injured boy from the ceiling and had taken him to a relative in North West.

On Thursday the pressure grew too much for the boy’s mother, and she told investigating officers where the boy was. "The woman told us she and the children had been held captive for years. She told how her husband had fetched the boy from neighbours last Monday. He had punched the boy, kicked him and stood on him,” according to Beeld.

On Friday, the 36-year-old man was taken into custody. His wife further claimed that he would attack and torture her and the children “day and night”.

Torture

Beeld reported that the children were shocked with electric wires and burnt with a blow torch. Police found the house full of chains, blow torches, ropes and pornographic DVD’s. It was expensively furnished, but the children were often expected to sleep all together on one dirty bed.

“The 11-year-old boy was made to stand naked on the porch one night as punishment. The woman said he husband would often strip her naked, tie her up and assault her.”

Charges of attempted murder, child abuse and obstruction of justice have been laid against the father, who is a successful businessman. Other charges of statutory rape are under investigation after a medical report revealed that the 16-year-old daughter was sexually active despite having never left the house.

Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini, police spokesperson for Gauteng, told eNCA.com on Wednesday that it was possible that more or different charges could be laid by the National Prosecuting Authority, and that this would only be known when the matter went before court.

Dlamini said he could not speak about the allegations or details of evidence found on the scene because the case was now before court. He also could not say whether or not the State would oppose bail on Wednesday.

The five children have been placed in the care of a relative, while there mother is staying with a different relative.

A 46-year-old neighbour told the paper she had known the suspect for years. He always appeared decent, wore good clothes and drove a Toyota Fortuner. She had seen his wife a few times. She saw the children for the first time on the day they were rescued by police, and described them as dirty and neglected while the parents had always appeared decent.

SPRINGS - A Springs father accused of holding his family captive in their home for a decade, has been denied bail.

The man’s identity cannot be revealed to protect his children, aged between one and 16 years old.

He is accused of locking up his family and abusing his wife and children over a prolonged period.

Magistrate Roy Le Roux says if the accused is released on bail, he could influence witnesses.

It has also emerged that the man's 11-year-old-son has sustained injuries consistent with torture.

The case has been postponed to June 12.

'Springs Monster' slits wrists

Johannesburg - A man dubbed "The Springs Monster" has been rushed to hospital after apparently slitting his wrists in the holding cell at the local magistrate’s court on Thursday.

The wounds were said to be quite deep but they had been bandaged, tweeted eNCA reporter Narissa Subramoney.

The public gallery in the Springs Magistrate's Court erupted in spontaneous applause when the man was denied bail.

The 36-year-old man was arrested after allegedly assaulting his wife and five children and keeping them captive.

Child abuse, rape, assault charges

The case was postponed to 12 June for the man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of his family, to obtain Legal Aid.

He faces charges of child abuse, rape, assault, and defeating the ends of justice.

Magistrate Roy le Roux found that the man did not even come close to convincing the court that it was in the interests of justice to release him on bail.

The court found that he made a false statement that his son was missing, and he could be charged with perjury.

"The State has a strong case as far as attempted murder is concerned," Le Roux said in his judgment.

Threats by the community

He was referring to a medical report of one of the man's children, an 11-year-old boy who had suffered numerous bruises and scars to his body. The boy also had a scar on his head from allegedly being hit with a knobkerrie.

Threats by the community against the man, should he be granted bail, were also taken into consideration.

The man was arrested last month after the 11-year-old boy apparently fled the house in Springs and went to a neighbour's house next door.

The neighbour called police and the five children, aged between 2 and 16, were found.

It was alleged that the man had abused his children and wife.

South Africa's 'Springs monster' slits wrists after bail refusal

http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/75323000/jpg/_75323934_springsman.jpg

A South African man, who allegedly held his wife and children captive in their home for several years, slit his wrists after he was denied bail, police say.

The businessman, 36, who faces charges including attempted murder, allegedly tortured his relatives in the normally quiet community of Springs.

The BBC's Pumza Fihlani says the case of the "Springs monster" has shocked and angered many South Africans.

Another man was arrested and accused of chaining his children inside a hostel room in the township of Alexandra, north of Johannesburg.

Outside court in Springs, local people protested, demanding that he should not be released on bail.

The court denied his bail application, saying he may interfere with the investigation if not detained.

Our correspondent says Springs, a largely conservative community, has been turned on its head, as it seem incomprehensible to many that the alleged atrocities happened and went undetected for so long.

The police confirmed to the BBC that the man was taken to a nearby hospital after he used a razor to slit his wrists moments after a magistrate turned down his bail plea. He has been placed under police guard.

The man, whose name has been withheld to protect the identity of his family, allegedly kept his wife and five children locked inside for several years.

Beeld newspaper reported that the children were shocked with electric wires and burnt with a blow torch.

Police found the house full of chains, blow torches, ropes and pornographic DVDs at the house when the man was apprehended.

The paper reported that the house was expensively furnished, but the children were often expected to sleep together on one dirty bed.

The court heard graphic details of how the man allegedly imprisoned the children - aged between two and 16.

'Tantamount to torture'

The state presented two witnesses at the two-day bail application.

Forensic expert Gerhard Labuschagne said he had a brief meeting with the accused last week after his arrest.

He submitted that the accused had done things to his wife and children that were "tantamount to torture".

Neighbours have told local newspapers they did not even know of the children's' existence until they were found last Tuesday.

The man was arrested after one of the children fled the house after his father allegedly threatened to kill him and alerted a neighbour.

His 11-year-old son alleged that his father had strung him up by the wrists for two days using a rope. When asked to be set free, his father is said to have used teargas on him.

Investigating officer Rudolf Jansen told the court: "There were live rats and rat droppings in the kitchen of the house."

Further charges, including one of rape, were expected to be brought against him after allegations that he had forcefully had sex with his wife.

Other charges of statutory rape are under investigation after a medical report revealed that the 16-year-old daughter was sexually active despite having never left the house.

He also faces charges of child abuse, rape, assault, and defeating the ends of justice.

The 36-year-old will remain behind bars until his next court appearance on 12 June.
