The Fourth Summit of the Turkic Council was held in Bodrum

The Fourth Summit of the Turkic Council was held in Bodrum, Turkey on 5 June 2014. H.E. Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, H.E. Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, H.E. Almazbek Atambaev, President of the Kyrgyz Republic participated in the meeting, which was hosted by H.E. Abdullah Gül, President of the Republic of Turkey. H.E. Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, President of the Republic of Turkmenistan was also present at the Summit meeting.

A meeting of Council of Foreign Ministers on June 4th preceded the Summit meeting.

Each year, the Summits of the Turkic Council are held under a specific theme, which was "Cooperation in Tourism" for this year. Several meetings were held throughout the last year to launch cooperation in tourism among the Turkic Council Member States, including the first meeting of the Ministers of Tourism in İstanbul in April 2014. At the Summit, the Presidents pledged to work together to utilize the collective tourism potential of the Turkic Council Member States. In this regard, they welcomed the concrete steps taken by their tourism authorities, such as the “Joint Cooperation Protocol on Tourism”, and the initiative for a joint tour program by the name of "Turkic Council-Modern Silk Road” comprising of tourism destinations of the Turkic States along the Silk Road.

The Presidents reiterated their commitment to facilitate trade flows among the Turkic States, thus underlined the importance of strengthening their cooperation in the field of transport and customs. They commended the establishment of the “Coordination Council in the field of Transport" to address the practical issues encountered by the transport operators on the spot.

The Heads of States supported the upcoming First Nomadic Games which will be held in Issyk-Kul on 8-14 September 2014, jointly organized by the Kyrgyz Government and the Turkic Council Secretariat. The First Turkic Universiade, to be hosted by Turkey in 2015 was also supported. They also commended the endorsement of the “Directive for the Establishment of the Turkic University Union and its Higher Education Area” which forms the basis of cooperation among the universities of the Turkic world.

They also pledged to protect elements of their common culture such as Turkic epics and culinary assets by submitting multinational nominations to the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO.

As an important step to build and strengthen ties among the Turkic speaking diasporas around the world, Regional Diaspora Centres will be established in France, Germany and the United States by the Turkic Council at the end of this month, an initiative encouraged by the Heads of State.
