Iraq crisis: Islamists force 500,000 to flee Mosul (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-27789229)

As many as 500,000 people have been forced to flee the Iraqi city of Mosul after Islamist militants effectively took control of it, the International Organization for Migration says.

Troops were among those fleeing as hundreds of jihadists from the ISIS group overran the city and much of the surrounding province of Nineveh.

ISIS has now reportedly taken Baiji, home to Iraq's largest oil refinery.

PM Nouri Maliki has asked parliament to declare a state of emergency.

The US said the development showed ISIS was a threat to the entire region.

ISIS - the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, which is also known as ISIL - is an offshoot of al-Qaeda.

It now controls considerable territory in eastern Syria and western and central Iraq, in a campaign to set up a militant enclave straddling the border.

'Chaotic situation'

Residents of Mosul - Iraq's second city - said jihadist flags were flying from buildings and that the militants had announced over loudspeakers they had "come to liberate" the city.

"The situation is chaotic inside the city, and there is nobody to help us," said government worker Umm Karam. "We are afraid."

ISIS in Iraq

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) has 3,000 to 5,000 fighters, and grew out of an al-Qaeda-linked organisation in Iraq

ISIS has exploited the standoff between the Iraqi government and the minority Sunni Arab community, which complains that Shia PM Nouri Maliki is monopolising power

It has already taken over Ramadi and Falluja, but taking over Mosul is a far greater feat than anything the movement has achieved so far, and will send shock waves throughout the region

The Takfiri couldn't get Syria so they'll try to take Irak.

As for Iraq, I hope Kurdistan in the north declares independence - so they can form their own national army for protection against these jihadis.

It's a damn shame that America now wants the same for Syria ... they are now increasingly supporting rebel groups to overthrow Assad. And if that happens, Syria will share the same fate of Iraq.

Al Qaeda would never have gained a foothold in Iraq if it wasn't for the American aggression and invasion.

America is an excellent promoter for Al Qaeda. Far from destroying it, they are nurturing it through their idiotic actions.

It's criminal and none of the Neo-Cons have been truly taken to task for this huge mistake. I personally knew one of those 3,000 killed in Iraq. He signed up for a second tour because he couldn't find work. Back then the gov. did absolutely nothing for returning soldiers.

I doubt Kurdistan would access Independence, because if it does Irak has no reasons to exist anymore and Shias would form their own State which would be a satellite of Iran, neither the USA nor Saudi Arabia would be pleased by it.

Who cares what the USA or Saudis think? Anything is better than the current situation. Iraq will have to split up.

They already fucked up Iraq, I doubt there is US public mood for intervention. Having said that, they are stepping up their intervention in Syria so you may be right.

PKK IS READY TO AID PESHMERGA (KURDISH ARMY) IF THEY NEED HELP:

Kurdish Communities Union (KCK) Co-presidency has issued a written statement following the capture of Mosul region by the ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) gangs on 10 June and stated that the guerrilla forces are ready to fight actively with the pesmerga forces in full support in order to help to sustain the security of South Kurdistan. KCK said “The gains of Kurdistan are today under threat, but Kurdistan is not without defense”.

KCK said the reality behind the occupation of Mosul is to attack against all the gains of Kurdish people and South Kurdistan. KCK also emphasized that ISIS gangs, in an attempt to occupy Rojava, were launching attacks against the gains of Kurdish people in Rojava, but have been successfully defeated by the YPG forces. KCK said “When the ISIS gangs couldn’t accomplish their plans in Rojava, they have started to carry out savage attacks in South Kurdistan”.

“The guerrilla force of Kurdistan is ready to defend and sustain the security of primarily the people of Sinjar and South Kurdistan, and generally the whole Kurdistan. The guerilla force of Kurdistan holds enough power to respond the attacks of ISIS under any conditions, and is ready to fight actively with peshmerga forces and offers full support”, said KCK.

KCK emphasizes that the recent attacks proved once again the necessity of building the Kurdish national unity and called on all the Kurdish organizations to help to prepare the national congress.

The Iraqi army has fled. Only the Kurdish army can liberate Mosul now!
