Hokkaido = different race and different in accent, laws, history, genetic.

I have browsed in Japanese sites and talked to some Hokkaido friends from youtube.

The ethnic Ainu who live in Hokkaido is 200,000 ( more than 95% ) apart from that Hokkaido people themselves are the result of 100,000 new Japanese migrants from Honshu mixing with Ainu so many average Hokkaidians properly have 1/8 Ainu ancestry or less.

I find it very interesting to be honest. Not only the Okinawans but also Hokkaidians want independence. And just like north and south Scottish are different race so are the North Japanese and South Japanese. They are mostly similar but still somewhat distinct enough to be considered their own race. Although more than 90% of them basically look like any typical Japanese, 10% of them look mixed mostly 1/4 Ainu to a few with 1/2 Ainu. Such traits is like 0.1% in Honshu Japan.

I support Ainu and Hokkaidian independence. They have a different accent and have unique looking people.
May the " Republic of Ezo" be born once again ( who were conquered by the aggressor mainland Japanese from the south). It was a short-lived state established by former Tokugawa retainers in what is now known as Hokkaido in 1869

HOKKAIDO ANTHROPOLOGY AND HISTORY

From google source books and Japanese language translation to English

"Hokkaido, a island in north to Honshu Japan with a population of more than 5 million "

" An estimated 200,000 Ainu and part Ainu ancestry today lives in Hokkaido."

"Intermarriages between Japanese men and Ainu women dated back in the Tokugawa period (1600–1868 ) when Japanese had controlled southern Hokkaido. In the 19th century, all Hokkaido became under complete Japanese rule, this led to massive waves of migrants from Honshu to Hokkaido. As a result of discrimination and slavery many Ainu men and women were forced to promote intermarriages with new coming migrants to lessen the chances of discrimination against their offspring. Generations of intermarriages had resulted in many Hokkaidians either hiding or forgotten their Ainu ancestry. As a result, many Ainu are indistinguishable from their Japanese neighbours. "

" A small but significant minority of Hokkaidians have distinguishable traits . The vast majority of Hokkaidian have Honshu Japanese traits to a minority with partial Ainu traits but Honshu Japanese traits ussually dominates. "

These faces are not typical of Hokkaidians but still a small significant percentages.

Please do not confuse these traits for european or caucasian because they have 0% to do with them

Jomon are old mongoloid where as East Asian are new mongoloid evolved from the ice age.

This is prove Hokkaido Japanese are different to Honshu Japanese because their tooth are Sundadont.

Jomon and Ainu have cranial facial similarity more to polynesians, Taiwan aborigines, Amerindians

Physical traits of Jomon " Round eyes, thicker lips, nose shapes and sizes ranging from broad and wide to hook and long, straight to wavy hair "

Jomon cranialfacial is more similar to Pacific islander Mongoloids than to anything.

Mark J. Hudson, Professor of Anthropology at Nishikyushu University, Kanzaki, Saga, Japan, said Japan was settled by a "Proto-Mongoloid" population in the Pleistocene who became the Jōmon and their features can be seen in the Ainu and Okinawan people.[41] Margaret Sleeboom-Faulkner of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Sussex said Kanzō Umehara considered the Ainu and Ryukyuans to have "preserved their proto-Mongoloid traits".[42] it is demonstrated that the Ainu belongs to the Mongoloid race, rather than to the Caucasoid. Their phenotype features are explained as generalized Proto-Mongoloid characters. [43]

Anthropologist Arnold Henry Savage Landor described the Ainu as having deep-set eyes and an eye shape typical of Europeans, with a large and prominent browridge, large ears, hairy and prone to baldness, slightly flattened hook nose with large and broad nostrils, prominent cheek bones, large mouth and thick lips and a long region from nose to mouth and small chin region.[44]

Jomons were basically pure old Mongoloid, they are hairy light skinned pacific islanders. ( Light skin and hairyness is not exclusive to the Caucasian race since it's even more common among Australian aborigines, Dravidians and even significant percent of Koreans are hairy.-

Hairyness and light skin are superficial traits added to Ainu and made them look deceptive pseudo-caucasian.

I would say Hokkaido people look slightly different to Japanese Honshu on average but a significant minority also look very different that is why on the anime they are sometimes given longer noses and more chiseled faces.

Yes it was a interesting anime to watch but is also based on true history about 150 years ago

Taxonomy section is for classifying people. Maybe this should be in the Anthropology section, or maybe somewhere else. People in Hokkaido are not that much different from any other Japanese though. They definitely are not a separate Race.

I though it includes pointing out different racial characteristics in group of people?

Hokkaido people's 5 million today originated today originated from the result of 100,000 Honshu Japanese migrants mixing with 10,000 Ainu families in Hokkaido, that is why they have higher Jomon genes and have the highest frequencies of unique looking people although yes they don't look that much different to the average but some Japanese pointed out they have slightly different charateresitic such as longer noses and bigger eyes.

Although yes they basically look almost no different ( like 90% of them or more)

But you'll find traits with like these ( but than maybe he and she is Japanese who doesn't know their Ainu ancestry )

That's what I though too. But Ainu are cranial morphology closer to Amerindians, Polynesian, Taiwanese aborigines.

It's the same nonsense claim about Aryan/European made it in south India when they saw blonde hair/blue eyes South Indians. In reality these are just albinos with genetic mutation.

These so called "Sundadonts", doesn´t have a developed epicantic eye fold, in contrast to "Sinodonts". In addition to Ainus, and as showed in the map, apparently sundadonts also includes Thais and Cambodians, and many of them doesn´t have a "sinoid" eyefold, although they are today (I think) considerably mixed with sinoids.

Sundadonts are somewhat similar to Amerindians / Native Americans.

Hokkaido is mostly mainlander Japanese by now. The way the Japanese treated Hokkaido was very similar to the way Americans treated the Wild West, with similar results (natives in reservations, mass immigration replacing the natives, etc). Hokkaido's population is much higher than the 200,000 Ainu/Ainu descended people you mentioned.

And the republic of Ezo had nothing to do with Ainu. From all that is written about them, the samurai retainers (and the Frenchman) that created it weren't that keen on treating the Ainu fairly.

Indeed, it was essentially a counter-revolutionary effort. I don't see how the Ainu play into that.

By the way, average Japanese from Hokkaido is Sinodont. The map shows it as sunadont to represent the native Jomon population.

The Ryukyu independence movement (琉球独立運動 Ryūkyū Dokuritsu Undō?) or Republic of the Ryukyus (Japanese: 琉球共和国, Kyūjitai: 琉球共和國, Hepburn: Ryūkyū Kyōwakoku) is a movement for the independence of Okinawa and the surrounding islands (Ryukyu Islands), from Japan.
