Victoria Syquia Quirino

Victoria Syquia Quirino (First Lady 1948-1953) – she is eldest daughter of the President Elpidio Quirino who was a widower when he assumed office and was considered as the country’s First Lady. Her mother and three siblings were killed during the Liberation of Manila in 1945. Dubbed as the “Teenage First Lady”, the seventeen year old beauty easily adapted to the whirlwind life with her bubbly personality. Even after her Malacanang stint, she became active in various activities that benefited the people who lived in poverty.

Intramuros will look like Vigan if that area was well preserved and well taken care of after the Philippine Liberation. the Calle Real where it used to be a village area.

It's too bad the Americans bombed Intramuros (The only European style Walled Castle-City in Asia then) and then we were too poor to rebuild it to it's original splendor.

I am going this year on December, I plan that already and check my GGG Grandmother's area too in Candon City which is also located in Ilocos Sur. We still have some relatives that still live there.

A monument erected in celebration of the 250th celebration of the transfer of seat of
Nueva Segovia from Lallo, Cagayan to Ciudad Fernandina.

The Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia is an archdiocese of the Catholic Church in the Philippines. It covers the province of Ilocos Sur, on the island of Luzon. The see of the archdiocese is the city of Vigan.

The archdiocese was erected in 1595 in the city of Nueva Segovia (modern-day Lal-lo, Cagayan). The see was moved in 1758 to Vigan because of its relative distance, at the request of Bishop Juan de la Fuente Yepes, during the pontificate of Benedict XIV. It became an archdiocese in 1951.

The Archdiocese is known for its pastoral thrusts of the evangelisation work, namely the formation of area-fixed SISA (Ilocano, Simbaan Sangkakarrubaan, "Church in the Neighbourhood"), and establishing barangay-based catechisms for children, youth, adults and families. Fr. Albert Rabe has also his own program of BEC called "Gimong."

The Archdiocese features the only Archbishop's Residence in the Philippines built during the Spanish Era. It is located just beside the Vigan Cathedral. The rear of the convent also had an access to nearby Govantes Dike, apparently a convenient exit point by sea, but it is no longer in use as the dike is no longer navigable. Both the Archbishop's Residence and the Cathedral itself remains to be one of the greatest contributions of the Order of Augustinian Recollects in the Philippines.

The Archdiocese also operates its own radio station, dzNS ("NS" meaning "New Sound" and "Nueva Segovia"). It is known for being a truly neutral radio station. It is a member of the Catholic Media Network.

The Archdiocese also operates a weekly newspaper, "Timek ti Amianan" (Ilocano: "Voice of the North").

Wow, Vigan is rich in history. Now I know why Vigan was spared from WWII
A Japanese Commander that was assigned to burn Vigan didn't push through because he fell in love and married to
one of the resident of Vigan and to protect Vigan from the bombing from the Americans they put flags
of the US all over the Plaza Salcedo.

Not known to many, the beauty and grace of Vigan could have been completely devastated if not for the love of Takahashi and Adela. It was a miracle that saved the town of Vigan during the last days of the Japanese occupation. As part of their military strategy at the end of the war, the Japanese were ordered to burn and completely destroy occupied zones before withdrawal. On the eve of their departure from Vigan, the Japanese Military Commander, Captain Fujiro Takahashi, pleaded with the SVD procurator of the Vigan seminary, Fr. Joseph Kleikamp, to take custody of the Japanese officer’s Filipino wife and their love child. The priest agreed on the condition that Takahashi and his men leave Vigan without burning the town to prevent the townspeople from seeking revenge on his family. The next morning, the people of Vigan were overjoyed to know that the Japanese had left peacefully and Vigan was miraculously spared total destruction.
