Neanderthals more mentally fit than contemporary humans

Scientists believe they have discovered why modern humans develop brain disorders like autism, schizophrenia and Alzheimer's but our near-identical Neanderthal cousins did not.

They say that while present-day humans and our extinct Neanderthal relatives are 99.84 per cent genetically identical, there are important differences.

They discovered the cellular equivalent of ‘on/off’ switches that determine whether DNA is activated or not.

Hundreds of Neanderthals' genes were turned ‘off’ while the identical genes in today's humans are turned ‘on’.

The international team of researchers, who reported their findings in industry journal Science, also discovered hundreds of other genes were turned ‘on’ in Neanderthals, but are ‘off’ in people living today.

Among these genes are those that control the shape of limbs and the function of the brain - traits where modern humans and Neanderthals differ most.

The genes related to autism, as well as to schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s disease, were more likely to be ‘off’ in Neanderthals than in modern humans.

The discovery also underlines the power of the ‘on/off’ patterns. Together, they add up to what is called the human epigenome, to distinguish it from the human genome.

The genome is the sequence of three billion molecules that constitute all of a person's DNA, while the epigenome is which parts of that DNA are turned ‘on’ or ‘off’ - even as the molecular sequence remains unchanged.

Some DNA that was switched 'off' in Neanderthals is switched 'on' in modern humans and vice versa

Some DNA that was switched 'off' in Neanderthals is switched 'on' in modern humans and vice versa

The epigenome exerts such powerful effects that it is often called the ‘second genetic code’.

In an interview Liram Carmel, of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, who led the study, speculated that any given gene might ‘do many things in the brain’.

When dozens of brain-related genes became more active in today's humans, that produced the harmful side effect of neurological illnesses.

The ‘on/off’ switches could also explain the anatomical differences between archaic and present-day humans, including Neanderthals' shorter legs and arms, bow-leggedness, large hands and fingers, and curved arm bones.

One caveat about the research is that one person's epigenome can vary markedly from another's due to diet, environment and other factors.

It is therefore impossible to know whether the ‘on/off’ patterns found in Neanderthal genes are typical of the species overall or peculiar to the individual studied.

Neanderthal Genius alive today

In the latest study, published online today in Nature Communications, Khaitovich and his international team analyzed the distribution of Neandertal gene variants in the genomes of 11 populations from Africa, Asia, and Europe.

They found that Europeans inherited three times as many genes involved in lipid catabolism, the breakdown of fats to release energy, from Neandertals as did Asians. (As expected, Africans did not carry any of these Neandertal variants.) The difference in the number of Neandertal genes involved with lipid processing was “huge,” Khaitovich says. The study also offers another example of the lingering genetic legacy left in some people today by the extinct Neandertals.

...

The team found that Europeans had differences in the concentration of various fatty acids in the brain that were not found in Asians or chimpanzees, which suggests they had evolved recently. The Europeans also showed differences in the function of enzymes that are known to be involved with the metabolism of fat in the brain.

He continues to get banned because he is a rape obsessed, stalker, who has harassed multiple women online including on this forum. That is not the type of member we want.

Rape? Where is this coming from? All I've ever seen him write are posts about Neanderthals. Maybe I am missing something here, but he seems to be bringing in fresh new ideas that are very thought-provoking, at least to me.

You are missing something. I wont mention who but several women on this forum have been harassed by him. I think you mustve missed a few of his posts. Trust me if it was simply the Neanderthal stuff nobody would ban him.

As if you have any authority to decide that. Anyway I think he should be unbanned. I like reading his arguments with ButlerKing.

I am not saying it on my own account only, but based on forum guidelines.

I wouldn't just make something like that up. Trust me I like thought provoking conversation just as much as the next guy.

Prehistoric people were better than modern humans in every way.Sure modern humans may be smarter more intelligent but they are still gracile weaklings than can barely haul their ass up the stairs.

Haha, what happened? ;)

It's easy: a stable mind existed once, this was the mind of the Homo Heidelbergensis. The male and female thinking did not differ in this period significantly the level of the creativity was lower, but this did not affect the intelligence. The Neanderthal man may have been intelligent similarly than me. But the modern man's evolution went onto a different way. This happened:

- more creativity
- more differentation between the male and female thinkig

And the consequences:

- more creativity = more instablity in the mind. The creativity is the ability of generating the errors, the strange thoughts. This is a grey zone for the brain and this growing instability is responsible for the schyzophrenia. The schyzophrenia is individual price of the community's benefit.

- more logical males vs. more sensitive females. This separation rare between the mammals, the average mammal female is a smaller male with less vanity based on their natures and body shapes. But between the modern humans the females are phisically very weak and mentally very social creatures and this separation is presumably imperfect. The autism is consequence, since the autism maybe the error of the stable logical thinking. The autistics are hyperlogical peoples and they are socially insensitives because of this. The formation of the modern humans' female mind entailed the loss of the stability of the logical thinking and some men will be too logical and some women presumably to illogical because of this. This extremities, the autism and the hysteria are the price of the community's benefit.

And what is this benefit:

- the womens are a social hub. The high-level communication, basically the continuous gossiping helps in the sharing of the information in the group and this increases the group's reactivity. And the separation guarantees that the strength and solid logical thinking of the group's half remains. It is a perfect solution with a small price for the community.
