I did a search but I couldn't find a thread on Sicilians in the Anthropology section but if there is then merge this thread. I find Sicily to be an interesting place, it came under Greek, Carthaginian, Roman, Byzantine, Arab and Norman rule over the years. All of them most likely had significant impact on the genotype of Sicilians.

The phenotype of a lot of Sicilians surprises me a lot. I know a gorgeous girl who is 100% Sicilian, but with some of the biggest, bluest eyes I've ever seen.

Yet at the same time, I know Calabrians who are on average darker than most Sicilians I know.

I've been to Sicily and I was surprised to see that there were plenty of people much lighter than I would have expected. There were, of course, people that were quite dark. Most were just typical Italian looking to me though...then again the majority of Italians in the US do originate from Sicily.

The variation is enormous. I was introduced to a man who my friend and her family referred to as "the Moroccan". At first I thought they were serious, but it turns out this was their uncle and he was just always at the beach. On the same day I met my friend's cousin who she called "the German". He was probably 6'1 and had bright blue eyes and light blonde hair. Even within a family the variation is significant. I think that they can all pass for "Mediterranean" though, regardless of whether they are dark or light. It's in their face.

Everybody knows that Sicilians are actually Greek and not really Italian and thats why they look so mediterranean and so different from the majority of mainland Italians(except maybe a few areas in mainland Italy where Greeks were) who are more similar to Germans than Greeks or Spaniards or other dark swarthy mediterraneans.

I said that most Italians around here are Sicilian in origin...not that I've only seen Sicilian Americans.

I was also briefly in Rome, but I have seen PLENTY of mainland Italians. I've known people from Siena, for instance. Point is, mainland Italians are not all blond and blue eyed...that would be a ridiculous thing to suggest. Your little picture comparison is just wrong.
