View Full Version : In the case that 23andMe is unsure of results what do they do?

Hey all so my question is in regards to the process 23andMe/similar companies do in the case of unknown results?

I have a friend who is going to a region of southwestern Ethiopia next year and I want to send her a couple dna kits to get a small marginalized population I suspect might be of Khoisan-like ancestry who lived there before the Amhara like groups and even before cushitic ensete farmers that came in the medieval period but I somewhat think that the results may be unaccounted for.

Will they just take them and make them fit? Where does Khoisan ancestry fit on 23andMe, would McDonald help?

Thanks :D

It doesn't matter what 23andme displays as results. The only important thing is the raw data and the number of SNPs. V4 of 23andme has less SNPs than the V3 (600,000 VS 970,000) but it's still way enough for analyses like ADMIXTURE, STRUCTURE, PCA plots, TreeMix, ChromoPainter etc... A few tens of thousand SNPs is enough for a decent run anyway.

By the way, if you want the data to be donated, you need the permission of the donor.

There was this case when an African guy scored 100% unassigned. I don't remember what 23andme did about it, but I remember that he made a thread about it at the 23andme forum. I can try to find it for you.

Well ofcourse I will ask haha how else would someone be able to stick that swab in their mouth; I am still trying to figure out a way for her to explain to an interpreter to then tell the potential donors though.

Its a bit harder for me to understand hard data without context, so who would be able to interpret for me?

YES! That would be excellent, I am surprised that could happen. Do you remember what some posters probably thought was the case?

AncestryDNA(http://dna.ancestry.com) is much more specific regarding African ancestry at the moment.

And although I'm not familiar with Khoisan ancestry, I'm willing to bet you'd get much more detail at AncestryDNA unless 23andme updates their program in the future.

AncestryDNA reference populations list for Africa:

•Africa North
•Africa Southeastern Bantu
•Senegal
•Mali
•Cameroon/Congo
•Africa Southcentral Hunter Gatherers
•Ivory/Ghana
•Benin/Togo
•Nigeria

Plus you'll get the full SNPs for your raw data as opposed to the current 23andme.
